McLaren F2?

A group of renderings have surfaced on Slovenian automotive site avtmanija.com of what could be the McLaren F2 – successor to the all conquering Mclaren F1. Of course the jury is still out on this one, so we will leave it to our highly intelligent user base to offer their opinions below.

McLaren are currently developing two new models, first up will come the successor to the Mercedes McLaren SLR – codenamed F11 which is expected to be launched in 2010. We will then see the McLaren F1 successor which is only known by its codename F12 at the moment.

McLaren are currently developing a new engine based on the current power unit found in the SLR. Rumours state the cylinder count could be increased from the current V8 to become a V10, power output figure should be in the region of 600bhp – that would be a lower than the current SLR. To counter this, the supercar maker will re-engineer and strip down the model to drop the overall weight to create the ultimate driving machine.

I hope that isn't the next Mclaren, it looks more like an early 90's Lotus Espirit replacement

Wtf you can't insult Giugiaro like that! "This thing looks like a late 00s Toyota MR2 replacement" would have been more accurate

Looks more like a vector than a mclaren

PLs don't tell me that after R8 no one can design a good looking sports car. Do we have to wait for Audi again to set an icon?

Point taken, Audi designs the best iconic cars

Oh man, I have to say that I am disappointed in this design. :( What happened McLaren? I hope this is just a very rough draft to kick off the design process.

The original still beats this anti-exotic "rendering" by a long shot. If this is what's being considered for the F1's replacement, then I'm very disappointed. I don't know if you could say that the F1 was ahead of its time, but this so-called F2 looks dated compare to the F1.

If it ain't broke...

Those pics are about year old and came out of european design patent database, so it's offical Daimler.

I am not sure what that last post means, as it is my belief this is a McLaren project rather than a DB one. But I recall Car magazine getting a look at a styling buck some months ago and a lot of what they describe will feature on the P11 is shown with this image.

I don't believe there will be an F1 successor, just a F430/Gallardo rival.

nono... its fine... its just shouldnt be called the "mclaren F1 successor" lol.. plain and simple. it might be the ultimate driving machine in the end, but design wise, it will never me the mclaren F1. and all the above about the lotus esprit and the vector... tru dat

Also, it's widely known that Mercedes and McLaren have split on the SLR replacement project. Mercedes have given it to AMG, while McLaren is working on their own mid-engined project codenamed P11. About a year ago, Car Magazine, who had seen the project, have revealed that the P11's dimensions are inbetween the F430 and the R8.

Looks like something that would've been conceived back in the 90s. I hope they can do better.

And I thought McLaren and Mercedes had split. Successor to an SLR? Hope not.

The design themes of this rendering are too dated to truly be the successor to the McLaren F1. If you think back to when the news of the F1's successor was released, there was an artist impression of a successor that ended up being published in the likes of Road & Track. That design direction would seem more legitimate. All we can conclude is that the F1's successor will have some large shoes to fill and it has no choice but to be a technological and a performance benchmark for other super/hyper-cars to follow.

...and I, for one, cannot wait.

Are you serious? Most would find it the other way around!

Exactly, ungifted Ferrari. Most see R8 in every home appliance, not speaking 4-wheel things. However, in this case it is justified by bad propotions and absence of taste.

Yep, this is bad. Someone was smoking something, I really hope this isn't the "F2". FU F2!

i am sorry but idon't think for a flat second that this is the next gen mclaren supercar. it just doesn't look finished, not even completely engineered properly. aerodynamically speaking if you look at the primary body plane it looks too much like a wedge, and i those rear air difusers look too small to disipate all the air turbulence, so at mclaren f1 speeds (220 mph+) that would cause alot of instability and that twitch that alot of cars without proper areodynamics get at high speed. if this is truly the new mclaren f12 supercar, aerodynamically speaking, it has a long way to go. if you ask me the original mclaren f1 looked the best.

The old one looked more up to date actually. This looks like a futuristic car from the 80's

I think it is highly unlikely that this would be a genuine rendering. Not just because of the dated styling but because of the major mistakes. The first one to strike me was the side mirrors. McLaren are well known as making driver-centric cars, placing the sideview mirrors at such an elevated level is not driver-centric. Second is the aerodynamics. It is clear that someone borrowed much of the initial shape from F430 and then added their own styling on top. In truth the aerodynamics of this are dismal. Such a design would build up major side turbelence buffeting the car side to side, and the bottom apparent in the renderings will only serve to provide lift. These are all errors that McLaren is extremely unlikely to make. Visually as well it lacks the balance of either the F1 or the SLR. This lack of balance is particularly evident from the top with the squared off windshield conflicting with the rounded lid top conflicting again with the pointed nose. Of course I'm ignoring the already indicated early 90s styling cues.

All said, if this is genuine it is a very, very, very early rendering before the engineers got their hands on it.

Does anyone knnow if the Mclaren Formula 1 team has any relation to this Mclaren super car maker?

August 19, 2008 3:54 PM
they are the same, mclaren f1 was a product when mclaren had colloboration with honda instead of mercedes. but we all know that mercedes and mclaren aint partners anymore in making supercars after SLR McLaren.

Not a very good time for another car like this. There are so many out there nowadays. It won't stand out. It will be just another super car. I doubt it will have the same impact the first one had. Is McLaren that desperate and promotes this using the F1's former glory?

this looks like a McLaren, that's good. the back seems a bit oldfashioned, but I like it ;)

I’m sure this car at least has 15 years old. This car must be designed in 20 century not in 21.

looks like a generic sports car, and aren't those rims coming from the GL-class ?

Tuner_Mad
August 19, 2008 6:41 PM
D'oh, this MUST not,and CANNOT be the next Mclaren. It should be more aggresively styled, with a roof scoop and spoiler (LM edition) like the old one. this just looks like any of those supercars out there. Only uglier.

If this is the next mclaren there is only one reason why it is. Mercedes ruined Mclaren, just the way it sucked Chrysler dry. I now officially feel worried for the Aston Martin/Mercedes connection.

The best thing for McLaren to do is to play it VERY safe and not come out with an F2 even if they think it will be better. The F1 is a classic that cannot be replaced... if they're going to make a car, they should, at least, not name it the F2...

Ok, dont try anymore, go buy a Ferrari and relax.

Why dont they just do a facelift to the F1 and improve its figures and so. It would be a huge hit.

Targa_Florio

McLaren will probably do a "design that follows function", as they did with the F1: a car designed by engineering.

apart from the f1 gtr they never did get modern
