The Hyundai Portico was first shown in concept form over three years a go at the Chicago Auto Show, but these first photos of a prototype prove the model will in fact make it to production.

This full-sized people carrier will fit in the Hyundai portfolio above both the Santa Fe and Veracruz and will look to rival the likes of the Mercedes R Class. It features a flexible seating arrangement in the rear area of the vehicle that allows seating for either 4 or 6 people dependant on whether the center deat is folded down or upright.

The Portico is expected to be offered with a V6, as well as with a hybrid powertrain, and will be built in Alabama.

well hyundai and mercedes are at 2 different ends of the financial spectrum... so it is kinda funny how hyundai is going for the higher end of the financial spectrum when they r at the lower end

Funny how ignorant people are these days. Hyundai has been building luxury cars for many years, even before the Genesis to compete with the Mercedes S class, E class and such. Just because you never saw them in your country doesn't mean that they don't exist. Please don't make comments like that if you don't know what you're talking about.

It IS funny. Like a child with a wooden sword and a pot on his head fighting imaginary dragons; you'd be daft to believe he's ready for war. Hyundai may make luxury products, but is by no means a luxury car manufacturer -- not in the west, anyways.

So, RS5, please stop accusing people of being ignorant. We're all fully aware of Hyundai's "luxury" products sold in crap-car-friendly markets, like Korea and the middle east. Such products seldom reach North American soil for the simple fact they would never sell. The new Genesis is a brilliant car, I read, in every respect -- equal to or better than its German rivals in almost every quantifiable field. And yet they would not sell a single unit if they charged anywhere near the price of a 5-Series or E-Class. Know why? Because Hyundai is an economy car manufacturer; they are simply incapable of charging premium prices for a premium vehicle.

The price of a vehicle in our capitalist market economy offers an accurate value of the worth of the product to society. It is funny to compare a Hyundai to a Mercedes because the Hyundai does not hold the same esteem in the public eye as the Merc -- it's like comparing a child clad in kitchenware to a marine.

I believe this website is called WORLDcarfans.com, not non-crap-car-friendly-market-fans.com. A luxury car that is built by a manufacturer is a luxury car regardless of whom it is built by. I really don't understand how you think Korea is a crap-car-friendly market. The cars there are just like, if not better than the ones that I see here in the US. Hyundai is a Korean manufacturer, and Korean people will tend to trust Korean products more, hence the fact that a Hyundai rival to the Mercedes S class will sell better than the S class in Korea. Why don't you do some research and see what kinds of cars from Hyundai came before the Genesis that were competitive to Mercedes' and such. These are not quote on quote "luxury" cars. They ARE luxury cars that are meant to compete with Audi and BMWs and Mercedes'. In Korea, and wherever these cars are sold, Hyundai holds the same esteem in the public eye as the Mercedes. Who says that Korea or any other country in the Mideast are not legit markets for cars because they are to you, crap-car-friendly markets. Ignorant people are NOT aware of these cars and scoff at the fact that Hyundai is trying to expand its luxury market elsewhere, thinking that Hyundai has never built a luxury car in its history. To YOU, Hyundai is an economy car manufacturer because you don't live where Hyundai's actual luxury products are sold. Because I know about these luxury products and have been to Korea to experience these cars first hand, to ME, Hyundai is just as legit a luxury car manufacter as is Mercedes or BMW. These cars I'm talking about would not sell in the US because Hyundai in North America is regarded by many as an economy car manufacturer, which it is not, unless you assume that everyone reading this article is from North America and has never been to Korea or heard of these cars, or that they simply don't exist. I don't know what you mean by the 'public eye', but apparently I'm not a part of it.

@RS5: There are places in the world where running water is a luxury; likewise, there are places where the Equus is the pinnacle of luxury motoring. I am talking about the North American public eye where Hyundai is regarded as an economy car manufacturer. The Hyundai Accident is being advertised on the subways here by the pound! I'm not joking. By the pound, the Accident (MSRP less than $10k) is cheaper than, like, salmon. And potatoes. This is not insulting to Hyundai because it is the position they strategically put themselves in upon entering North American/Western European markets. I don't have to be ignorant to think Hyundai is a dreadfully unappealing auto manufacturer here in the west. In the future it is very likely Hyundai's image will change, but, in the meantime, I'd prefer to pay the little extra and get a tonne of potatoes.

Don't get me wrong. When I visited Korea, they had all sorts of Ferrari, Lamborghini, Rolls Royce, Maybachs, the whole lot. But by far the most common luxury cars that I saw were the Equus, Grandeur and the Dynasty, along with some other cars like the Chairman from Ssangyong. I admit that in the North America, Hyundai does not place itself as a high end luxury manufacturer. What angers me is the fact that people look at the Genesis, or whatever, and scoff at it because they think that Hyundai will never build a decent luxury car, when in reality, it has been doing so for many years. You must also understand that cars like the Azera and the Genesis have been stripped down to the basics to be sold in markets other than those in some parts of Europe, the Mideast and Asia. By the way, what is a Hyudai Accident? My point is that Hyundai has built products that have rivaled that of Mercedes, even before the Genesis. This is a website that addresses cars from all over the world, not just North America, and therefore, I see people who ridicule Hyundai for trying to expand its luxury segment to different parts of the world without even knowning what came before the Genesis and such, as ignorant.

Hyundai may not be strong enough to become direct competition to Mercedes as yet; however, they will surely catch up in the coming years.

I drive a Merc E Class for my family car (I swore to never to drive a SUV) and a C Class as my commuting car...I love the brand (the current cars are our family's 7th Merc's...I call it brain-dead brand loyalty)...but I don't think I can call a car like the E Class that is also used as a taxi a true luxury car either.

The S Class yes! But as a consumer I regard the E Class in the same light as the Genesis.

You may not get them in the States, but Merc has some inexpensive cars like the A Class and the B Class as well as stripped down C and E classes that are basically well engineered cars...not luxury cars.

It's like a Hugo Boss suit, not a Kiton or Brioni suit.
