It is still a year away, but General Motors has chosen today to lift the lid on it's new sport truck, the Pontiac G8 ST. GM had run a “Tame the Name” campaign leading up to today and after sifting through 18,000 submissions, Pontiac chose to keep the label simple.
El Camino proved to be the most popular submission amongst fans due to the model's resemblance to the classic Chevrolet.
“We actually thought very long about El Camino,” said Bierley. “In the end, we felt it was more appropriate to honor the El Camino’s unique place as part of Chevy’s heritage and not use that nameplate on a Pontiac.”
The G8 ST is derived from the Holden Ute, power comes from a 361hp V8 engine which allows the Sport Truck to accelerate from 0-60mph in just 5.4 seconds. Thanks to its six-speed automatic transmission and Active Fuel Management system, it also boasts some of the best fuel economy figures in its sector.
The cargo bed measures 73.9-inches giving it a cargo space of 42.7 cubic feet, it is able to carry a payload of up to 1,000 pounds (453 kg) and tow capacity is rated at 3,500-pound (1,587 kg).
Pricing for the Pontiac G8 ST will be announced closer to its launch date.
