As SLR production comes to an end in 2009, it appears Mercedes McLaren are scrambling to compensate poor sales with yet another SLR variant in the form of a 722 Edition Roadster. Joining the already long list of variants which include the 650hp / 478kW SLR 722 Edition, SLR 722 GT, SLR Roadster and the final SLR Speedster currently in development, the 722 Roadster seems like a desperate attempt.

In these spy photos, which appear to be taken outside of an AMG facility, judging by all of the Mercedes-AMG models littering the street, we can see an SLR Roadster carrying all of the visual cues distinctive of the SLR 722 Edition. They include palladium grey 19-inch forged-aluminium wheels, clear coat painted carbon fiber front lip spoiler, red brake calipers and the large brake discs. Also the black-painted air outlets on the bonnet, not to mention the palladium grey-trimmed taillight clusters.

One of the best pictures I have ever seen. Just look at all the AMG's in the background.I hope my backyard will look the same.

So because of the poor sales figures, they make another SLR...

Logic?

there's plenty of cars that have legendary status and that will do so for years, depends on preference

Why do I get the feeling that if this one fails, with poor sales figures to boot, they are going to build another varient that will be called something other than an SLR?

I am not understanding this logic. It is a very nice car, don't get me wrong. But I figured they would do something with the price tag to try and boost the sales figures a bit.

Ahh well.

Part of the problem was because of the price tag. But they were also too overambitious on making too many(3500).

Nurchus you are 100% right, if they lower the price to the half or little bit more, i think the demand will be great, because there are so many people who loved the car but they don't have enough money to buy it. I am one of those people as well

I just hope and pray MB doesn't do the same mistakes on the previous version SLR. The price tag has not changed. In fact, it costs more now! But if they built the same number as the previous SLR, this model line will die, and MB will take a big hit to their wallet. That will make me sad.

I guess we can all wait 10 years and buy this thing for 50K? Haha, here's to wishful thinking!

Cheers!

It's a shame the SLR didnt meet expectations. I believe McLaren also has called it quits with them. Lets hope the new gullwing is a hit.

hopefully mercedes buys 100% of mclaren (they already OWN a large share). This would ensure things are done even better in the future. for those that do not know, rolls royce, bentley, and mini are no longer british as they have sold themselves to the germans.
