Over the years we have heard BMW officials strongly deny M sport variants of the X5 and X6 time and time again simply because they can’t offer the same dynamics as the M saloon, roadster and coupes. And now, after a recent interview with Auto Motor und Sport, BMW M GmbH’s boss, Ludwig Willisch, has performed an about-face in perfect military style.

According to Willisch, ‘M’ prototypes of the X5 and X6 are both in existence and are currently undergoing testing at the Nurburgring Nordschleife. He continued that BMW M GmbH plans to complete both models by the end of 2009 and have them on the roads shortly after.

Therefore, if BMW is compromising its M philosophy, then why not add a diesel? When asked if this was a consideration, Willisch responded, ”in medium term, there is no such intention.”

The M division is becoming just another upper-class whore of a company, and this is just what they need to get them there. Now every BMW driving soccer-mom will be driving one of these at volatile speeds that they aren't used to.

You can't even remotely compare an American SUV to a German one.

i don't know... it's like Mercedes putting the AMG to almost every model they've got... G55? ML63? like we need soccer moms' petrol heads burning whatever fuel there is left in the planet in their run to the grocery shop....

BMW's M-Division is basically for race-tuning their cars. What blasphemy that they should adopt SUVs and (ball)SACs! When have M3s ever shared a track with an X5 or X6? This is nothing more than a lesson in "What NOT to do with your in-house tuning department." I cannot compare Mercedes' AMG division to BMW's M division, however, because Mercedes has never claimed to be the ultimate driving experience. Brilliant cars, yes, but not hard-core driver-oriented.

I dont think its a stupid idea or a car made just for mums coz BMW wanna do just like Mercs did with the ML63. I mean its fair enough. Dont try to find a logical reason coz there's none. its all marketing. Theres no love for cars anymore they just make cars coz they kno they gonna find loads of buyers (full of money)...

Badshahgal, what are you trying to say. Try sign language.

Merc has an ML55 AMG and 63 AMG. JEEP have the SRT 'hot jallopy Grand Cherokee'. The one thing that the world is yet to see is an SUV that not only sprints like a sports car (coz there is already a couple of them) but hits curves and exists like them. All the others have failed and so BMW coming to play will prove them that it is the best in the business coz it'll make an SUV that will redefine this segment as the X5 had done in the past. I call that hitting the last nail in the coffin.

BMW is responsible enough to put a M badge on a worthy product. It has given us great cars in past and it wont let down the most powerful letter in the world

I drove an X6 35d yesterday, what a car, the only downside was this car was running on 21" dealer fit alloy wheels, that caused tram lining and slight over sensitivity to the camber of the road. Other than that I hooned it around some tight lanes and it performed exceptionally well. Minimal body roll and fantastic acceleration, although the brakes lacked feel but had more than enough stopping power when stomped on.. roll on the more powerful petrol variants! good work Munich
