looks like the 998 platform with the current 997MK-II body on it. seems the next generation of the 911 is getting wider and longer.

additionally the tail and the fron parking/fog/LED lights are painted on, tryinf to disguise a different shape... and the tail lights still have the masking tape to disguise the shape additionally...

yawwnn... porsches are boring me more than surprizing me. especially the designers (look at what they "did" to the boxter and the cayman that got leaked out... pfft). i hope they make another carrera GT type something.

Looks like the 998 will get a slightly longer wheelbase (and possibly shorter overhangs).
July 18, 2008 12:18 am
Incredibly how the 911 Continues to get more gorgeous as time goes on.
July 18, 2008 12:44 am
incredible how it doesnt change over time. like, at all. you'd swear the first 911 and this were only one model apart instead of 50 years or however long it was.
July 18, 2008 2:43 pm
"...fender extensions, which indicate a wider wheel base.."
I think he meant a wider track, not the wheelbase.

Porsche could probably design something new, but that would miss the point actually!
The idea behind the 911 is that this car, more than anything has an image sculpted by decades of racing victories and generations of continuous evolution. This car was perfected over all these years using a lot of research that has gone in improving the car, rather than reinventing it every generation, as most manufacturers do today. Why invest millions in rebuilding a car for the same segment when you can improve on the last one and make it even better!? That's how they think, that's their driving force. The simple design is an expression of that philosophy and is actually one of the things that make Porsches so popular. It's marketed to wealthy middle-aged men, who are more likely to have enough money to buy one and prefer the subtle styling, rather than the "boy-racer" styled GTR, which by comparison, seems to be marketed to drooling PS3 gaming 12 year olds with it's "in-your-face" styling. Unfortunately for Nissan, teenagers are very unlikely to posses the financial backing to actually buy a GTR.

Wow another porsche that looks the same as every other porsche ever made. I know i'm going to cop abuse over this comment but the opinions of wealthy middle aged men don't bother me.I know their racing pedigree is brilliant but their styling is boring and soon the 12-30year olds will dictate the market. I don't really care if porsche don't bring out some more stylish cars, they are making mountains of cash. I just think with their engineering capabillities and racing heritage they could take it to the next level.

Wrong Albe, cause you see, when these 12-13 year old kids grow up and remove their firmly planted head from their asses and realise what a Porsche is and more importantly a 911 is. Then they will either buy a 911 or dream of buying one. Their "dictation" of the market will continue to "dictate" Porsche being highly successful and one of the largest car companies, especially as they will soon swallow up VAG under their control.
The 911 has always and will always be a gorgeous car not to mention VERY aerodynamic from a low drag point of view. As ShinyG said it is an evolution and from an aesthetic point of view, the 911 will never need to change much, just small details. However the most important thing about the 911 is that despite it looks seemingly never changing...the insides ALWAYS do, always becoming better, faster, stronger, these changes gained through Porsches experience in racing.
You might want to read a book called "Porsche 911- Perfection by Design" by Randy Leffingwell. You might actually learn something. I always feel sorry for the ignorant few who know nothing and do not realise what makes Porsche the BEST.
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it"-The 911 will never need to change. As for change needed at PORSCHE, what the hell do you think the Boxter, Cayman, Cayenne and Panamera are all about ? They offer porsche at different prices and different segments. In those segments their cars are also the best save for the Panamera which we have yet to see but don't be surprised...
They all look like a Porsche, but thats the same reason the GT-R looks like a nissan with the pointed back headlamps and all. For the record the GT-R is gorgeous, but the 911 is a different form of beauty.

all extremely valid points. =) but, seriously guys, everyone MUST admit the styling's getting a bit boring? i know its aerodynamic, but seriously talk about one-trick-pony styling. when they came out with the carrera GT everyone went "oh s***! a car with porsche's capabilities that doesnt look like every single other one ever made!" honestly, if they did something radical and completely changed the shape their sales would skyrocket...

xanavi23 i would rather stick a burning piece of coal in my eye than read some book about porsche.Like i said i couldn't give a rats arse if they didn't change their design, because there are obviously a lot of people that like that same old shape. What i am saying is they may have dug themselves into a hole. Maybe i am wrong and that design will do well for the next 100 years. But i am over it. To me design cannot be perfected .Would it kill porsche to test the waters with some interesting concepts.
July 18, 2008 1:08 pm
Lol..."what im saying is that they may have dug themselves into a hole"
No they clearly havent, now more than ever they stand poised to swallow all of the Volkswagen/Audi alliance or at least the MAJOR controlling share.
With cars like the Cayenne base catering to even lower market groups, Porsche toying with the idea of an even lower-model and having Audis' Diesel technology, not to mention ALL technology from the VAG group they stand only to make more money and stand even further above other manufacturers.
Remember, now that Porsche is in-line to run the whole show....all money made by VAG eventually ends up in the hands of Porsche. So all those Golfs, Polos, Boras, Passats, Ibizas and so on and so forth.....all that cash comes back to big daddy Porsche. It all comes back to the Genius possessed by the folks over at Stuttgart.
Digging a hole you say ? Nahhh, they were digging for gold and oil...and damn....they found it. Gonna find even more as time goes on. Not only does Porsche make the BEST sports cars in the world but their also financial wizzes. I suppose thats to be expected tho, before they made cars, they were financial advisors....that does explain everything.
July 18, 2008 2:46 pm
(my point being, regardless what Porsche sells, as long as the rest of the group does well. Porsche isn't worried, also Porsche would never fail so that helps too.)

"The idea behind the 911 is that this car, more than anything has an image sculpted by decades of racing victories and generations of continuous evolution."
Thank you. Everyone wait for an other design...choose another car!
I'm not sure, if it is really a complete new 911 or just another version. Maybe a GTS or so (like Cayenne)?
July 18, 2008 2:34 pm
When are people going to stop chastising Porsche for not having revolutionary styling? That's not the point, go buy a poster of something else you can't afford if you think Porsche design is boring. These are cars for driving, and the silhouette of the 911 is one of the most recognized shapes in the automotive universe.
July 18, 2008 4:48 pm
This picture is nothing more than a 2009 911 with fender extensions due to the wider wheels (maybe for the next 997 GT3 RS or other wide body). There are no other changes to lamps and the such (except for some tape). It is a bold statement to say that this is a 998 test mule.
July 18, 2008 8:23 pm
Wow, this porsche actually look badder than before. Surprised they are still using the same shell for nearly 40 years.
Will they change the shell on the '1000?'
July 18, 2008 9:04 pm
Lucifa, i can understand the styling getting boring to some. However in all honesty to Porsche fans like me, or maybe me alone, the styling is still fresh. I see it like, its the same greatness as always with subtle changes that usually carry a purpose.
However lets say the 911 is getting "boring" for some Porsche fans. The Cayman S is a very good car and yea it does look like a Porsche but its not what somebody would call a 911 rip-off either. Also with Porsche testing a Cayman turbo, Porsche fans who want something as fast or almost as fast but dont want the "boring" look now have an option. Dont worry brother, while i know the 911 won't change, not for a while, the other models Cayman and Boxter won't have to stick to the 911-esque looks since they're "new" models, they have a bit more freedom there.
July 19, 2008 11:24 am
true that. i just never liked the 911 look the way so many people do - the 997 turbo looks decent, but not groundbreaking. so yeah its getting boring for me because i didnt love it in the first place and there's been no dramatic change. but still, if this is what floats your boat then ill leave off insulting it if everyone else agrees to leave off bangle-bashing.
all that aside, i hope the new turbo blitzes the GT-R on the 'ring. for all im a bimmer man and not a porsche-lover, the throne of the ring should be in germany, where it belongs.

Porsche - Simply the best. Superb handling and good looking. Still the Best Super Car in the World.
July 20, 2008 9:57 am
fair point. the f40 and f50 along with the diablo were some of the most insane cars ever made.
but i reckon the f1 takes the cake. nothing, with the possible exception of the track-only merc clk gtr, was even in the same friggin league for roundabouts a decade. am i right in thinking thats the only time thats happened in all the history of motoring?
July 21, 2008 12:30 pm
Porsche 911's aren't supercars. they are more like high peformance coupes or 'GT's.'
As for Supercars, Ferrari ftw. =) Not the California or 612 though.

Ferarris also carry 100% mark-ups at dealerships. 599, amazing car...the price ? MSRP is 300-350k, but good luck finding one for that much. They're usually sold for 600-700k, the same applies for the rest of the line-up. Ferraris are great cars, but as good as they are, the mark-ups aren't justified and also the waiting list is rather lame.
July 21, 2008 12:16 am
In Dubai ,you can get brand new second hand 599s( I've seen 4 ads so far).
July 21, 2008 1:19 am
im just curious, how much ? cause if you can find a no-markup 599 thats pretty sick. Very good car(obviously).
