A year before the Maserati GranTurismo was revealed in Geneva 2007, retractable hardtop prototypes were spotted testing for a short period of time, but then development was put on hold as priority went to the new Ferrari California. With the recent unveiling of the new Ferrari GT car, the boys are back now testing at the Nürburgring with the new Maserati GranTurismo Spyder.
Just like the Ferrari California, the new Maserati Spyder is based on a shortened Maserati GranTurismo coupe platform. The Spyder will receive the same 405hp 4.2-liter Ferrari V8 engine and 6-speed ZF automatic transmission as the coupe.
The Maserati Spyder is expected to launch in 2009.

havent they figured out by all the road tests done on this car that it needs a much larger engine to carry all that weight??? this car is FAT, and i'm guessing its still fat even being a convertable as well.
Now that is a classy car. It looks amazing, just like the bentley who cares if it isn't a track car, its got way more hp then it will ever need.
I have a gran turismo and 405 hp is plenty. It is not always about numbers, but the experience, emotion and excitment of driving an italian stallion. I have a 911 and a Lamborghini gallardo but the gallardo is just too much power for around town as the 911 is more fun around town because you can actually use all the gears.
really?? hmm i'm just refering to road tests and reviews... and they've come up with the same answer about too much weight and too little power to handle that weight in a little more "sporty" driving for a driver lets say. but yea you have a point about too much power in the city and town that's very true (aka jerkiness, not using all gears etc etc..)
I hope it has the ultra-light retractable top from the california. It would lower the center of gravity considerably.
hmmm i guess that this is the granturismo for the ladies and the granturismo coupe is for the males... personally i think that the coupe is more practicale becuase it can carry 4 people in comfort and some of their lugage but this can only carry 2 ppl nd probably very little luggage when the tops down
The GranTurismo is more a touring car whereas the S will be more a sports car. Actually the GranTurismo feels like a 599 driving other than the hp difference and better handling on the edge. The guy that designed the 599 also designed the GranTurismo--both are front mid-enging cars.
