Performance figures for the new Fiat 500 Abarth were pretty disappointing with just 135hp coming out of the 1.4-liter Turbo-charged engine, we were looking for something closer to the 175bhp Mini Cooper S. Therefore to keep those performance obsessed consumers happy, the Italian brand is launching an “Opening Edition” version featuring some performance enhancements over the regular model.
The 1.4-liter turbocharged power unit sees output boosted to a more respectable 160 horsepower with a maximum torque of 230Nm (available at 3000rpm). The increased power knocks half a second off the 0-100km/h time putting it at 7.4 seconds whilst the top speed has been boosted to 211km/h – up from 205km/h.
Other performance upgrades include front and rear perforated disc brakes, high performance front brake pads, a special ‘powered by BMC’ air filter, special low springs and 17" alloys wrapped with 205/40 R16 ZR 17 Pirelli Pzero Nero tires.
The Fiat 500 Abarth Opening Edition is available in Campovolo grey livery featuring an optional chequered flag roof or alternatively in pearlised White. Just 100 units are planned to be produced for the Italian market and there are no indications Fiat will export the limited edition model anywhere else.
