BMW X6 Hybrid Spied

Hot on the heels of the BMW X6 M comes the latest set of spy shots of the hybrid version. We first spotted this prototype testing in February this year when it sported a massive power dome and judging by these latest shots the engineers are getting closer to production. The power dome appears almost non-existant now that the engineers can remove some of its testing equipment.

The hybrid powertrain will be based on a the two-mode hybrid system that was developed between BMW, Daimler and General Motors and will be further enhanced with a regenerated braking system. It is unclear which engine it will be coupled with at this stage, although sources state we should see an overall fuel economy reduction of 20%.

Launch of the X6 hybrid is expected sometime in 2009 as a 2010 model so we shouldn't have to wait too long before initial details are leaked released.

Does no one understand the fact that since the car has already been released, it would atract less attetnion to leave it un covered?

Maybe they want the attention , seems not many people like the design.

^ I thought they sold out of the entire first year's production? I'm fair certain people like the design, but hate the fact it's a world-destroying SUV. Although this option is bound to improve the X6's stature, I believe hybrids are incredibly stupid.

@ Bremen_Koenigsegg = Have a look at this before you say hybrids are useless , http://www.popsci.com/environment/article/2008-07/ferrari-prius

I've already seen that, but thanks for playing. I should clarify: from a green perspective, hybrids are useless -- in fact, I would argue they're environmentally hazardous. Performance-wise, there is some benefit to hybrid drive, granted, but none that compensate for the additional complexity and weight. They are not offering the X6 ActiveHybrid as a performance enhancement; it is a fuel economy-minded option.

^So you're saying if Ferrari, which usually does cars which are pretty much useless anyway, decides to do useless hybrids you actually get a car that is... less useless!?

since bmw is doing hot weather testing in death valley, as shown in the pix, the production stage is not too far out... 6 months or so.. if bmw really wants to go ahead... but the x6 is not really the car to bundle with a hybrid... too much weight, to costly base... the 1er with the 120i as hybrid, or the 120d with hybrid, that would sell well!!!

If you had an engineering package that adds a 20% fuel economy improvement wouldn't you use it on the vehicle that needs the improvement the most?

Coupling this ugly behemoth with a hybrid engine kinda defeats the prupose no?

The X6 is a brilliant vehicle. If there was a hybrid vehicle out there I would buy, it would be this one. The design is a radical, yet welcome change. Everyone has these preconceived notions of how a car should look and feel, and I must say, the X6 is a joy.
