Audi Officially Announce New 3.0 TFSI Supercharged Engine

as is the case with turbo vs supercharging. It all depends on how the engine is tuned. A automotive manufacturer simply has to tune its intake/exhaust for higher rpms to complement a turbo and get high hp numbers, but such cars aren't as fun to drive since they generally have an extra exagerated spike in their torque curve... making it harder to predict and drive. Same goes for super charging, if you tune the intake/exhaust/rest of engine for low rpm torque you can get really impressive numbers... but it ends up running like a diesel and the engine quickly runs out of breath at higher rpms. To me an optimal set up would to tune various components of the car to peak efficiency at different stages of the rpm band. This method won't give you the most powerful or torque numbers, but it will be faster and easier to drive overall. All in all flat torque curves rule!

turbo's are more efficient compared to superchargers. from what i've heard... turbo's are related to air and superchargers are related to gasoline. Basically one works with air to get more power, but the supercharger sprays more gasoline into the engine and gets power that way. That's what i've been told at least. but yea, personally i'd go for a turbo just for the noise itself. The supercharger whine is quite annoying to me lol

Carcrazy, turbos are more efficient because they create boost from wasted exhuast heat as it expands while leaving the combustion chamber. Superchargers are less efficient because they create boost by spinning directly from the engine crank. Both deliver the same "forced induction". Turbos have been given a bad rap for turbolag, but thats almost non-existent in modern, low-inertia, multi-scroll units. Superchargers get a bad rap because efficency decreases with engine RPM. However, you can always put an electromagnetic clutch on the supercharger pulley and disable it when not needed...
