VIDEO: Corvette ZR1 in the Paintshop

In this video GM shows us the paint process for the Corvette ZR1. Typically taking 6 to 7 hours per vehicle, the process starts with the body panels loaded onto a rig and passed through a series of spray and heating booths. Although the video skips the sanding and feather dusting process it's still interesting to watch.  Here's the recipe:

  1. Panels loaded already covered in a conductive primer
  2. gray primer is applied
  3. bake for 30 minutes at 265 degrees
  4. clean sand and feather dust dirt particles
  5. spray base color coat to a thickness of 0.7 to 1.2mm
  6. bake at ambient temperature (80 degrees)
  7. spray clearcoat
  8. bake for 20 to 25 minutes at 250 degrees

Was that for the ZR1 or all Corvettes cause the bumper covers they show at the end are normal C6s.

GM says the vehicle being shown is an actual ZR1 but the ending shots show the rest of the Corvette production line.

Nice, but the paint shop shown here is not as impressive as the one at Ferrari's factory... that's awesome. If interested, look up the video at youtube, it was on a Discovery show, megafactories, and they were building a 599 GTB but you could see various models in the paitshop
