We all know manual is not better...but to some people they find manual funner and their is nothing wrong with that.

that's true. Manual can give a lot of fun. I can't imagine sequential gearbox in a F40 or an Ariel Atom or even Gallardo. But everywhere else new dual clutch gearboxes are simply better. Especially when you want an everyday sportscar, like GT-R or 911 Turbo/Carrera.

Ingenious marvel. Being a control freak, I prefer a manual with a foot-operated clutch - it makes me feel more connected to the machine. The manumatics are fine with their lightning-quick shifts, horsepower- and torque-management, and all-around driveability under "normal" and "track" operations, but I simply don't feel as involved with a manumatic-equipped vehicle as I do with one having a foot-operated clutch. I guess I'm a fool...because I sure smile like one when I shift the "old way!"

I would like a car with a dash-mounted clutch pedal, please.

Some physically disabled folks have this retrofitted in their cars. This and other double-clutch 'boxes are the future. You just can't lose with them, especially when you can still change using the gear-lever instead of the steering-mounted hand pedals. Heavy traffic kills clutches all over the world.

I think it's the best transmission in the whole world until now.

More gears is most of the time, a good thing. That way, the engine can be in its power band for most of the time. But, yes, 7 gears is quite a few. Some other manufacturers are even onto 8 speeds.

And we'll see ten long before another decade is over. Efficiency rules the day, and the biggest efficiency improvements to be had right now (for the lowest investment cost) are in the transmission/drive-line.

I have always wondered if this gear craze will ever stop will we see 10 speed autos/DSG gearboxes in the near future?

Audi, Nissan, Honda and others make CVT, which is theoretically an unlimited number of gears. Drives like being stuck in 1st gear endlessly.

i agree that 7 is too many gears for a performance car. on something like an S-Class it's all well and good because it improves the smoothness and gives good fuel mileage but otherwise a car should have 6. 7 is just too much choice and i can see the transmission getting confused which will end up hurting performance. in so far as WCF's claim of high powered cars not having dual clutch transmissions, i take it that doesn't include the 1001 PS Bugatti Veyron or the 369 lb ft A5 3.0 TDI or the 354 PS S5 or the up and coming Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S?

Here's BMW trying to be unique again just for the hell of it (SAVs, PASs, 4-door-coupe-SUV, that pointless monstroity called the GINA). I've lost much respect I have for the brand. Seriously, a 6-speed manual is sufficient for any car. Obviously for a car with manual transmission, smooth shifting is not a priority.

what does it have 11 settings? is it really necesary? please, anyone who would own an m3/m5 with this gearbox, raise ur hand if you'd use each one of those settings, in a normal day drive...or even a race with one of ur mates...or going shopping..or banging ur girlfriend on the back seat (..or on the fron seat)...? this is so stupid. i don'e care make it dual clutch, make it triple clutch 10 speed, just f*ck the settings. (heck knows but any day, i would buy the 6 speed manual)
