New BMW 5 Series Spied Showing its Kidneys

New BMW 5 Series Spied Showing its Kidneys
BMW F10 5-Series test prototype / AUTOMEDIA

In comparison to the F10 BMW 5-Series spy photos taken in February, these latest images recently snapped just outside Germany's Nürburgring race track show a Fiver prototype without its front grille camouflage and lower bumper grilles with a larger mesh pattern for better air flow. Perhaps for efficiency testing of the cooling system, the shape of the characteristic BMW twin kidney grilles are in clear view. Also showing are a set of big sporty wheels with low-profile tires not seen before on previous prototypes.

Overall the 5-Series is set to receive less adventurous styling along the lines of the conservative E90 3-Series while receiving some design cues, particularly in the rear, from the 7 Series.

Electronic features to name a few will include wide angle cameras in the side mirrors for greater overall visibility, upgraded iDrive user control system and enhanced Park Distance Control with visual display.

Set to debut on the new 7-Series, the F10 5-Series will receive a new 8-speed electronic automatic transmission for ultra smooth shifts and efficiency while the M5 will be the only 5 Series model to receive the new double clutch M-DCT sequential transmission which appears on the M3 later this year. Also, optional all-wheel-drive and a wide range of six petrol engines from the 2.5-liter 218hp to 4.4 liter V8 twin-turbo with 400hp found in the X6 and four diesels ranging from 2.0 liter 175hp to the twin turbo 286hp 3.0-liter inline 6.

With the current E60 5-Series on the market since 2004, the arrival of the F10 5er is still less than two years away with an expected launch in spring 2010 as a 2011 model and the M5 to follow a year later. Surely we can expect the 5 Series prototypes to gradually shed their camouflage over the next year.

Length and door/window shape is 7 series. Highly doubt it is a 5 series.

Clearly a 5-series (unless they have disguised the vehicle by hiring a 7-foot tall 350 pound driver!) I can seek peeks of the crease running along the side on which the door handles sit. Interesting. I certainly hope the stretched-back "eyebrows" are gone forever, and that the shape of the tail lamps (when viewed from the side) look less like a Kia Rio and more like a BMW CS Concept. I'm waiting (and waiting and waiting) for a big diesel with a stick in the U.S. I'll be one of the first in queue! Diesel RULES!

BMW actually posted the concept designs of the new 5 on an auto website before, and i still have it on my PC. It seems BMW has adhered strictly to the concept designs. And it's no wonder. I actually emailed them to adhere to the design closely.

The kidneys just gets bigger and bigger. Next thing you know, the Grill will take up the whole of the bumper.

Whingers please... are you serious whith your allegation on the BMW grill being big. If that is the case then you must come up with another expression on the Mercs and Audi grills.

What's up with you people? Do you have a problem with big kidney grills? Look at Audi's V grill ... don't u think it's huge too?

Yeah its huge, but fits in with the style of the car. The grill on this just sticks out like a sore thumb. They better make the styling good for the grill to look good. So far, I ain't impressed.

interesting to see if they incorporate the cs style headlamps into the design of this 5 series although i doubt it, we can but hope, as bmw needs to do something they may be more common on the road than a ford but they fade into the background these days.

How can pipomhonestly see beyound the tapes and make a conclusion that BMW's 5'er will have a grill that sticks out like a sore thumb. Rather wait for the 5'er to be launched then one can make judgement besides BMW kidneys are unique compared to tractors or truck like grills. Doen'nt take a genius to pen them now does it?
