Going global is the name of the game these days, and what better division to do it for Ford than their only profitable division, Ford Europe. Certainly the most adept at anticipating market conditions, Ford Europe, gets design and construction responsibilities for the new range of global products.

Already we see the new Ford Focus, which started out in Europe, finally making its way to North America, and it is speculated that the next generation Mondeo will follow suit as the new Taurus. But Ford Europe could revive a old classic name as a small sports coupe, the Capri.

As the European equivalent to America's pony car, the Capri, particularly the Mk III built between 1977 – 1986, was a nimble, well equipped and reliable vehicle, which to this day enjoys a cult like following.

It had been speculated for years that Ford would bring the sporting coupe back from the dead, especially after showing the Visos (see attached photos) coupe hatchback concept in Frankfurt in 2003, but nothing materialized.

But now the story is gaining traction again, and the new Capri is said to be heavily influenced by the Iosis concept, which also played a major design role with the current Mondeo. With a concept expected in 2009, the Capri is said to use the mechanical components from the Mondeo with a 2+2 configuration.

According to insiders, it will be front-wheel-drive, weigh less than 2600 lbs (kg) and an RS version with a 4-cylinder turbo unit making between 150 – 200hp. Production could begin in 2012.

I can't imagine why they wouldn't build this. The development cost should be low. In many of Ford's markets they are hurting for relevant products that create some desire with consumers. Here is about as much desire as has been seen from their current part bins.

looks great, almost like an aston martin...

the original capri was butt ugly... just like the opel manta... (not the 1st gen. manta, but the subsequent models)

and this ford would sell in the US very well, just like the lastest mondeo... i have no idea why ford is trying their luck with an ugly duckling like the 500, or taurus...

the euro ford focus would do great, the euro mondeo ould do great, the capri would do great if they build it...

the mustang would sell great in europe if a diesel or smaller engine would be put into it... but as an option the v8 does sell ok as grey import... i don;t understand why ford is handling their line-up this way... same for GM, i think their demise has a lo to do with how they handle all this... they must burn a fortune developing the same cars with different wrappings and engines.. especially the engines... why not develop one line-up, super clean and good mpg rating, and that is sold in europe and the US...

the c-max and s-max would do a lot better than their minivan on sale in the US right now... nobody wants to be seen in a thing like that... it has to be stylish, handle well and comfortable and have good mpg rating... all those things apply to most of the euro fords...

of course the EU line-up has design fuck-ups like the ka, one of the ugliest cars on the planet, but the next ka will look very good...

and what;s with the pick-up trucks??? why no f-100 diesel for the EU and the 3rd world countries??? the euro ford ranger is butt ugly!!! and the heavy duty trucks, especially with 3rd party structures would do well here... most of the work trucks in the Eu are ugly and not very thought thru... when i see the trucks for electrical companies in the US i always think to myself how happy an EU worker would be with one of those... but if there's only small grey import companies no big corporation would dare to get one of those, for those buyers it has to be with a lease and a shop that is handled by the manufacturer...

Thats what "going global" is all about. Its described in light detail in the first paragraph. Ford & GM should have done this years ago. GM only beat them to it by a life-cycle or two.

Well the Capri was a car that enthusiasts could work on to repair it with little help , it had solid metal parts that could be replaced easily and people all over the world wanted to restore it . The fun factor was its real wheel drive system and to have a 2.8 v6 was so much fun in the wet and dry! , It had alot of schoolboys wanting one and i really dont think this new one has a chance.

The Big rival it has is the vw Scirocco and judging how that looks ford will have to produce something very unique.

"an RS version with a 4-cylinder turbo unit making between 150 ? 200hp"??? The Focus gets 280hp!!! And it was originaly a 2door coupé, not a 4door.

your perception is obviously flawed. the mazda styling cues are evident especially in the front fenders. look closer.

I remember Capri, my car-interest started then and Ford Capri's influence was huge. Visos have Capri's side windows shape and it is beautifullly designed and classy car, Mondeo is not.

That mondeo was Iosis, but no difference, how you call that "dream-machine"

The Capri should be sized closer to the Focus than the Mondeo. And four cylinders only, please.

nice looks, very nice. but the RS version of it will have somewhere betweeen 150 - 200 bhp? and what about the unRS versions, 100 - 150 bhp? ....kind of pathetic, both

why not a rear wheel drive like the pontiac G8 and the dodge charger, bring the falcon wiht the 5.4 liter double over head came for the gt version or cobra and put the ecoboost for the regular version.thas a real car economical for one and muscle machine for other.like the g8 GT and the charger srt8.same thing whit the mustang, put the v8 5.4l 425hp in the mustang or boost it whit a supercharged, because gm and dodge have biger machine this year whit camaro and challenger
