Audi A5 Cabrio Spotted for First Time

Audi A5 Cabrio Spotted for First Time
Audi A5 Cabrio spied in Switzerland

In September at the Paris Motor Show it is widely expected Audi will unveil the A5 Cabrio to the world's media, but prototypes of the new variant in the A5 range have stayed well and truly out of the limelight leaving the talented artists around the world taking their best guess of what the model will look like. That is of course until today when British site AutoExpress managed to obtained this lonely low res photograph of the Cabrio whilst out on the public roads of Switzerland.

Judging by the grainy texture it was taken by a passer by on their mobile phone and as the prototype is lacking any form of camoflage, we can tell this is a model not too far frommbeing unveiled for the public.

Under the hood the same engines from the coupe are expected to be offered with petrol engines ranging from the 168hp 1.8 liter engine to the range topping 261 3.2-liter V6 engine, diesel offerings include 2.7-litre with 190bhp and a 3.0-litre V6 TDI with 240bhp.

The cabrio, at least with a soft top would kill the beautiful lines and details of the A5 and S5. Also, wouldn't this car just completely eliminate the necesity of an A4 cab? Both would be priced roughly the same. I don't think they should make the A5/S5 into a cab. both were just meant to be coupes in my opinion.

If Audi will have an A4 and A5 cab, the A5 should have a folding hardtop. Audi should've taken another year, and added another $3-4K to the sticker to pull it off. This was a really big missed opportunity for them.

Full ACK. The A4 could come as a soft-top option cabriolet and the A5 could fill the CC niche.

why would Audi bother to make a 2 door version out of the new A4 to make the A4 cabriolet, while they already have the A5 coupe which is a perfect base for a convertible? Besides the A5 is actually the A4 coupe so it is logicall to make the new cabrio also as a A5.

It looks more like an A4 Cabrio judging from the lights as they go higher towards the ends, which A5 don't do... But probably an A5 since it's two door, and anywyas the only notable difference between the A4 and A5 is A5's indicators in rear taillights are on top where as in A4 they're at the bottom..

red soft top please. guys do you find it wise to buy convertibles with diesel engine under its hood? I know those diesel are quieter these days, but we can still hear it loud and clear right?

Not really, when idling, most new CDI engines are noticeably different from gasoline in sound, but not in an annoying way. However, once you begin to accelerate the vehicles sound virtually identical (from inside the car).

a 6cyl diesel, despite being rougher in sound and low rev driven, maybe but never a 4 cyl diesel.. no matter how quiet they may be.. when you buy an open top car, half of the fun comes from an exhilarating exhaust note, so gasoline 6 and 8 cyl will remain ubeatable for awhile

I've never heard a modern 4-cyl diesel. I live in the US.

and whats this drivel about a4/a5 cabrios? there was an a4 as long as there was no a5 (coup? version of the a4), so you dont need to be a rocket scientist to figure out this car (a5 cabrio) is the natural replacement of the current a4 cabrio
