With new 7-speed automatic double-clutch gearbox

Its Friday and Porsche has given us just the tonic to start our weekend off with a bang by revealing the first photos and details of the 911(997) facelift. Subtle modifications to the exterior provide a slightly updated look, but beneath this superb posterior the Porsche engineers have really gone to work.

For the 2009 model year, the Carrera and Carrera S will get a new optional seven-speed automatic double-clutch gearbox dubbed Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK) along with a new direct injection system– the first time we have seen this in a Porsche sportscar. The new double-clutch gearbox replaces the Tiptronic S automatic transmission and now allows the gear changes without any break or interruption to traction and pulling power.

The 3.6-liter unit in the 911 Carrera has been boosted by 20bhp bringing total output to 345 bhp. Acceleration time from 0-60mph stands at 4.7 seconds, an extra 0.2 seconds is shaved off this time with the double-clutch gearbox. Despite the rise in power the 2009 Carrera's fuel economy figure remain impressive coming in at 9.8 liters/100km whilst reducing emissions by up to 15% keeping it significantly below the Porsche's benchmark of 11 liters/100km for the Carrera range.

Not to be left out, the Carrera S' 3.8-liter unit has been tuned to power out an extra 30bhp bringing total output to 385 bhp. The sportscar can now shoot from 0-60mph in just 4.3 seconds with the double-clutch gearbox and it can now achieve a top speed of 186mph (300 km/h).

As we already mentioned the exterior modifications are kept to a minimum with the incorporation of front and rear LED lights along with slightly redesigned bumpers. Pricing for the 2009 Porsche Carrera will start at €69,600 for the Coupe and €78,000 for for Cabrio whilst the Carrerra S will start at €78,000 for the Coupe and €88,000 for the Cabrio.

k, odysseus... investing billions to make a car? I don't know the numbers but I doubt it is billions. If Porsche was willing to invest billions into the Cayenne, they aren't going to see that any time soon. That being said I believe Porsche lost all of it's good designers by now. The new models they make are complete rubish in terms of asthetics (think Panamera and Cayenne). I believe the reason why they don't redesign the 911 is not because they don't have the money to do so, or because of "tradition" or any of those other brand faithful words. But because they know if they do, they will never be able to live up to people's design expectations. So they take the pussy way out and release minor face lifts every few years.

If it aint broke , dont fix it, I can understand about the similar looks as other years , but its very distinctive and not many cars have lasted this long,

i think they have done a pretty good job, i mean it´s just a facelift not a complete new model. the pre-facelift doesn´t look old now and the LED rear lights and new bumbers makes the car look a bit more aggressive.

what´s more interesting is the technical side of the facelift, dual clutch gearbox, afficient DI engine. porsche says it could run to 60mph in 4.3 seconds, so in reality it will be around 3.8 then and still very efficent, that´s great :)

i`d rather own a timeless, elegant and unique "son of a frog or beetle" whatever u may call it-sportscar than all these soulless overloaded supercars on steroids, like a Murcielago or veyron, gumpert etc.

The current one was developed in 2005 guys.. Porsche is about evolution.. if it aint broke dont fix it.. the changes are awesome.. being in sales at Porsche alot of these things we have been waiting so long for.. the transmission.. the touch nav. blue tooth new wheels etc.. The next generation Porsche will be out 2011 as a 2012. Main focus is Panamera now..

The PDK looks nice. Porsche is ALL about passion and soul. Thats why you've always seen the same design qualities since the beginning. They stick to their passion and don't sell out like BMW and some other companies by making their cars noticeably bigger and fatter. Then again, this is my opinion also.

Joe_Limon, maybe you're right about Porsches lack of designers or that "tradition" a lie when it comes to the 911, although i doubt it heavily, it doesnt matter :) . That 997 there up top, is gorgeous and whether "classic" is bull or not, on the 911 it works, a 911 is unlike any other sportscar for better or for worse. Theres no mistaking a Porsche 911 for any other car which makes a great sports/supercar(depending on trim) even more of a specialty among other cars.

Timeless and unique as... always! PDK is for grandpa's and new rich posers tho, they even got the shifting motion on the wrong side (in a real sportscars sequential box you push to downshift following the motion of the car). Expect better looking 19" wheels as an extra cost. Hopefully delivered by October.................

I've always believed Porsche 911s to be for petrolheads who love the engineering aspect of cars, not only the appearance. They might not be the best looking cars in the world, but they also aren't the ugliest. And think about the Targa 4s! It's beautiful! Milonakis, people find its inner workings beautiful, because it is one of the closest cars to engineering perfection that is actually drivable day to day, unlike a Ferrari. Even though Ferraris are brilliant. :)

FALSE hahaha. The only reason it exists is because its slower than a 911 Turbo despite costing almost as much. Its a great car...but Audi R8 versus Carerra 4S maybe, R8 versus 997T now way man.

porsche doesn't want audi making a car that'll take away buyers from their turbos and GTs... same concept for why porsche doesn't want audi making the r4 because it'll take away buyers from the cayman/boxter line of cars

Porsche is probably a fantastic car as I said above but cars in 40-s and 50-s looked quit same. All but Porsche are made something more than restyling of their first model. Could we really want to live with it or accept the first Ferrari to be restyled in 2008 in Porsche's way and we've never saw the Testerossa or F430?

that´s rubbish @GTrs09. 1st of all Porsche is World's Most Profitable Carmaker and the company more or less owns VW and Audi soon.read the news. 2nd the Audi R8 is a complete different concept. 911: 2+2seats, rear boxer-engine, styling: class, tradition. R8: 2seats only, mid V-engine, styling: in your face. both fit under one roof. if Porsche sells 911s, Porsche wins. If Audi sells Audi R8s Porsche also wins. see?!

Yea, either way Porsche wins, but that might not want Porsche to lose to many customers if only for bragging rights. As for my post, i mentioned the R8 and 911 together because numerous magazines have thrown them together because it is close between a 4S and R8. And although they are in different market segments or niches, they will of course be cross-shopped by a fair amount of buyers.

i do know someone who drove a 911 and bought an r8... after a few days with the r8 he traded it back in for the 911... porsche makes incredible cars no matter what model line it is. people will buy a porsche even if it isn't the best looking car. look at the x6, a somewhat ugly car in my opinion and many others, bmw will sell every last one made because it's a bmw.

They introduced this new double-clutch(like the GT-Rs but different) transmission which makes the new models even quicker than last years 997. Now take this transmission which is gonna be to the 997T and toss in the guaranteed tweaking of the 977T 4WD system and you have a proper answer to the GT-R ;)

No they used Fuel Injection for a long time, since the early 80s i beleive, however they are now using direct injection which means they inject the fuel right into the cylinders as opposed to injection upstream in the intake manifold.

Porsche doesn`t need to own the whole stake, just the majority is enough to have a certain power as far as VW and Audi concerned and they are on their way to it. They are already profiting from VWs and Audi sales now and the green light for more was given by the US FTC this week, others will follow. By the way The R8 is soon comin with an V10 engine and 525 BHP. With their current influence, Porsche could have easily stopped or delayed that engine, if they would see any real threat for their own current model range (GT-2 530BHP or the upcoming Turbo-S). As said, both models work perfect together and attract different customers and big amount of sportscar enthusiasts together. Porsche almost did and does everything rite at he moment.

911 and R8 are both fantastic automobiles, admirably proving you can make a direct confrontation with such disparate concepts (tradition and hi-tech exotic engineering vs state of the art modernity). And, unless you're wealthy enough to afford them both, they're aimed at different buyers.
