Last week in Zolder, Belgium, Top Gear found themselves in the spotlight of car enthusiasts from all over the world once again when The Stig took off his helmet at the local race track. And in no time every news car sites around the globe were reporting to their readers that Top Gear's The Stig is Tim Schrick, test driver / TV presenter at Germany's DMAX TV station.
What they failed to mention is the fact that Top Gear was at the Zolder racetrack to shoot an episode where a British Top Gear team (including The Stig) took on a German Top Gear team, made up of Sabine Schmitz, Queen of Nürburgring Nordschleife, and yet another Stig. After the filming of the 'double decker' race Ze Stig from the German team, unaccustomed to the ever present Top Gear fan boys surrounding the track, took off his helmet and revealed his identity to the world.
There have of course been numerous claims that there are multiple Stigs, and that they change every so many seasons for one reason or another. The usual suspects are Damon Hill, Julian Bailey, Mark Webber while Perry McCarthy and now Tim Schrick are confirmed Stigs (Black Stig and German Stig respectively). Even Lewis Hamilton and Nigel Mansell have had the finger pointed at them. In short, even with this unveiling at Zolder, we are no closer to knowing who the actual British Stig is.
A full video report in Dutch by TV Limburg can be found here. More photos can be found on Djivy's site who was the photographer behind the fence documenting the event.
