Viral videos come in all shapes and sizes, ranging from wacky (in a funny way) Romanian tuners to just plain wacky. Kia published its Euro 2008 video on Saturday only to replace it with a 11 second 'teaser' Monday morning after devastating critique from the blogosphere about the Celebrity Deathmatch-style video.
And rightfully so, the video really is beyond comprehension. It starts innocent enough with Rafael Nadal playing tennis against an alien, Nadal is winning when the alien spawns 6 arms and bombards Nadal with tennisballs and a football. The court changes into a football pitch as the alien doubles in size and Nadal spawns four mini-Nadals who perform a little dance.
Then it gets really weird as Nadal stick his legs into the butts of two mini-Nadals while the two remaining attach to his hands. The gruesome Mega-Nadal continues to run at the alien and blow him to bits with a blistering shot through his abdomen. Nadal finishes by morphing into a Kia Pro_Cee'd and driving away.
Kia quotes on their blog that "All advertisers are trying very hard to find unique mediums in which to deliver their key messages and promote their brands. It looks like just “being unique” seems to be easier than “being effective” sometimes." We really can't add more to the topic than that, unique and effective are two very different things.
Update: Kia has re-edited the video (see above). Click the source link for the original.
