In its first year of production, BMW will produce 40,000 units of the new X6 Sports Activity Model with half of those heading for the U.S. Dealerships and according to BMW AG chief executive officer, Mr. Norbert Reithofer, it has already sold out. There are still reportedly some dealership that have a few models left although there are some that are reporting they have a waiting list.

There were a large number of doubters about the X6 when it was first launched stating the interior space was too small for an SUV and driving performance could not be strong enough for this model to be labelled as a coupe, but it seems that BMW have had the last laugh. The X6 opened up a new niche in the automotive market which will surely be entered by other premium manufacturers over the next few years.

The success of the new model is likely to spur the German manufacturer into action to create yet another SUV in the form of the X4. Whereas the X6 is based on the X5 platform, the X4 would be based on the X3 thereby creating a smaller version of the SAV.

They managed to build something that's more useless than a standard SUV haha. Good thing americans tend to buy the dumbest things.

I hate this approach: If there will be buyers, lets build such a nonsense!

There should be some method of preventing such beasts coming to the market. Board of Directors at BMW should really intervene when market demands drive them to offer hideous products like this.

I agree with the comments above. If I would like to have pure fun, then go for an M5 or M6. And if you need just a SUV, why not go for an X5? It's still sporty and offers almost the same engines except the V8 twinturbo (which is nonsense in such a heavy car anyway...)

Just read an article on Evo UK about the Wiesmann GT which uses the 4.8 V8 NA engine. Such a good and smooth engine but wasted by BMW on heavyweights like X5, 550i, 650i etc. The Wiesmann coupe weighing as low as 1300 kg, shows the real beauty of BMW engines...

Anyway, all the best wishes to the owners of X6! :)

The only redeeming feature of a SUV is their practicality, and if you like that kind of thing, their rugged styling.... this has neither of those. Please if you want a luxury coupe buy a real one rather than clogging our roads with this monster

40,000 units for the world is hardly anything. The car has had great reviews though!

Well, I think the X6 is interesting altogether. The thing is that it has to get better Personality hence presence.. By the way, the X6 is not the first coupe SUV, that concept actually belongs to the KIA ACTYON.. Check out guys. I feel that BMW is taking the same direction as TOYOTA: build as many models as the globe can accept and forget about speciality.. It has worked for TOYOTA but it could not work for BMW which will mean disaster!!

40, 000 units already sold is the same as selling so many cars on the first day. This is actually an achievement and goes to prove that whatever a few BMW negative people say, the car will sell. The world ahould infact take note and appreciate at what's beinig made coz the days of bundu bashing and big family cars is history. Familys now are much smaller and as a matter of fact this car is aimed at a specific market being young rich and adventourous plus the aged chaps who still love big cars with a lot of grunt. This car is a big hit and face it, it will sell and the car critics have not called it anything but a very good looking and powerful 4 x 4 coupe with enough leg room.

I think you're all wrong.

Selling the whole production this earlier in a new model is a big success for BMW. There are people who are willing to buy this without even seeing it for real...

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I think this car look awesome. It's not Aston Martin beautiful, but it has it's own charisma and presence in the traffic. That's why it will sell a lot. Today's new trend is big SUV's. It's the new symbol of the rich rather than 7 series and equivalents...

Buying the X6 is not a choice of logic. If buyers used their head, they wouldn't buy something this unpractical when BMW already offers X5. It's just an emotional choice for X6 buyers, thinking that X6 must be something of a different class. But they should realize there's nothing much different in terms of drivability compared to X5, just like the reviews are saying. At the end of the day you're in the same vehicle but with different clothes on, with much less practicality. So X6 is for the posers, who got nothing much to prove than their wanting for a show-off, and it indicates that X6 buyers are not exactly informed car buyers.

First time I saw this thing in a mag I thot surely it must be some sort of printing mistake... I dnt even blame the designers, I blame those that approved the bloody design! Sure it sold but this is one of those cases where a short-term success will probably result in long-term losses... en yo LEMZQ, I'm South African 2... holla atcha boy!!

They say Lexus' are for people who have a lot of money but don't know anything about cars. Lexus has had much success exploiting this. Everyone knows that Lexus' drive like crap, but they are soft and cushy, therefore they fill a niche. The X6 also fills a niche. It's new and different, it's a BMW, it rides tall so people who drive big SUV's but want to downsize enjoy the tall ride highth, like the many affluent women here in America. Because it's a BMW and because it's new, people with money who don't know anything about cars will shell out $60k for one so they can make a statement. Of course BMW will whore them out by giving them away on leases with ridiculously high residuals and crazy low lease rates.

I personally would never consider one of these due to the reasons everyone else has stated. I would rather have a sports car AND a utility vehicle, not a fake vehicle that poses as both. Give it 2 years and sales will sharply drop off.

Give me a CLS550 and a Chevy Tahoe and I'm fine!

I dont kno what people who dont like this thing are talking about. This thing is gorgeous, it offers good space, it offers good handling cause of its sports car roots and that twinturbo V8 is gonna make sure the thing moves. I always liked the X5 alot...but damn man, this thing is even better. I can totally see why this thing is sold out. Its a perfect niche filler.

May 9, 2008 10:08 PM
Its truly just an X5 with "coupe" styling. The twin turbo V8 and ZF torque-vectoring device will be in every big AWD BMW soon. And the normal X5 is "limited on space", so to chop that up even more in the name of "style" is interesting... But the uninformed will continue to buy this stuff, so BMW should sell it!

i hate when BMW haters just talk trash about BMW. all i see is people sayin if u want sports car but this, if u want SUV buy that. STOP all that crap. if this was done by another company a lot people would be ok with it. just like Mercedes WTF is a 4 door coupe??? they did it and people love it. so now BMW came up with something new. so dont talk shit. cuz its nice and its gonna sell by large numbers

If the haters of this car were so smart and suggesting that the people that bought this car are stupid, then what happened to these same critics and money? What ever BMW makes will get trashed by humans who love to hate a winner. These posts just go to show how different people are, Not too long ago they were calling the X5 ugly and now just coz there's a better car than there stables cars they call the X6 Ugly and the X5 has suddenly morped into a good looking car. Doesn't it hurt to see that the same cars they call ugly outsale their so called fratenal/identical twin looking cars.

Marcel, i do not agree with you as i believe that we have the best pakaged coupes in th 3, 6 and X6 series. Audi on the other hand have changed their designs i.e. on th A4 a couple of times and it still looks like 'yesterday'. This is day light robbery to the buyers. The A6 at least changed. The A5 coupe (not cabrio - it's ugly)and R8 at least for now are the cars in your stable holding the candle. The rest look like face lifts.

The X6 has some nice features, but just doesnt fit the right proportions, which makes the car look hideous.

I don't think that the comments here are directed against all BMWs, just this one, the 3, 5 and 6 series are handsome cars in my opinion- but this isn't and as I stated before, lacks the main features of both SUV and coupe

Never underestimate what a person is willing to give up in the name of style. Although I despise the entire concept of an SUV, I will not deny genuinely adoring the styling of the X6. I know the rear legroom is left wanting and the trunk space is almost useless, but those details are largely irrelevant. Forget the significance of the marque, forget the SUV capabilities; people will buy the X6 if they think it is aesthetically pleasing. BMW is not a whore for selling it; they're acting in the best interests of the company and BMW owners. And shame on all of you for thinking something shouldn't be sold just because it is useless! I'm not about to advocate market fundamentalism, but get with the program. BMW is an automobile manufacturer; we should be glad a successful German marque has successfully launched a new model. It almost makes up for the X3.

isn't it just following the infiniti fx 45, that looksl ike a coupe on steroids, too and sold like sliced bread in the states. theonly downside could be that BMW is watering its brand message of pure driving delight with theese heavy honkers. But then their goal is to become the most sold premium all wheel drive vehicle manufacturer, and they are close.

Theres no point to this car, this thing, this thing that probably costs 40 grand, cant go off road, because lets face it, whos taken a bmw 4x4 off road? (gravel and grass doesnt count) show it something difficult that like a jeep could get thru no problem, and it will get stuck.

And i doubt Merc is gonna follow, because they have the GLK coming out which is a nice cross between the C class and their next gen AWD system which i hear "can" go off road.... cant wait. if you're gonna be a box, atleast go out and look like a funky box... :)

1- Correction: I previously said "KIA ACTYON" but it is Ssangyong - thanks azeemkhan1999 2- Lately I saw a number of X6's on the road and that only cofirmed my aforementioned notion: this thing has no real presence.. Still though, I admire the concept - if only it had been excuted more cleaverly!. And the engines are awesome as usual.

recent UK figures show that approx 90% of SUV / SAV etc have never been off road, the X6 is a completely new genre and in no way designed to be an off-roader. It handles like a coupe AND you can fit all your baggage in. Brave move and great car!!
