In its first year of production, BMW will produce 40,000 units of the new X6 Sports Activity Model with half of those heading for the U.S. Dealerships and according to BMW AG chief executive officer, Mr. Norbert Reithofer, it has already sold out. There are still reportedly some dealership that have a few models left although there are some that are reporting they have a waiting list.
There were a large number of doubters about the X6 when it was first launched stating the interior space was too small for an SUV and driving performance could not be strong enough for this model to be labelled as a coupe, but it seems that BMW have had the last laugh. The X6 opened up a new niche in the automotive market which will surely be entered by other premium manufacturers over the next few years.
The success of the new model is likely to spur the German manufacturer into action to create yet another SUV in the form of the X4. Whereas the X6 is based on the X5 platform, the X4 would be based on the X3 thereby creating a smaller version of the SAV.

There should be some method of preventing such beasts coming to the market. Board of Directors at BMW should really intervene when market demands drive them to offer hideous products like this.
I agree with the comments above. If I would like to have pure fun, then go for an M5 or M6. And if you need just a SUV, why not go for an X5? It's still sporty and offers almost the same engines except the V8 twinturbo (which is nonsense in such a heavy car anyway...)
Just read an article on Evo UK about the Wiesmann GT which uses the 4.8 V8 NA engine. Such a good and smooth engine but wasted by BMW on heavyweights like X5, 550i, 650i etc. The Wiesmann coupe weighing as low as 1300 kg, shows the real beauty of BMW engines...
Anyway, all the best wishes to the owners of X6! :)
Selling the whole production this earlier in a new model is a big success for BMW. There are people who are willing to buy this without even seeing it for real...
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I think this car look awesome. It's not Aston Martin beautiful, but it has it's own charisma and presence in the traffic. That's why it will sell a lot. Today's new trend is big SUV's. It's the new symbol of the rich rather than 7 series and equivalents...
I personally would never consider one of these due to the reasons everyone else has stated. I would rather have a sports car AND a utility vehicle, not a fake vehicle that poses as both. Give it 2 years and sales will sharply drop off.
Give me a CLS550 and a Chevy Tahoe and I'm fine!
I am out and out a Audi/VW group fan - BUT - BMW builds great driving cars/with great engines - Its just a shame they all looks so HORRIBLE!!!!!!
And i doubt Merc is gonna follow, because they have the GLK coming out which is a nice cross between the C class and their next gen AWD system which i hear "can" go off road.... cant wait. if you're gonna be a box, atleast go out and look like a funky box... :)
