Mazda is getting ready to launch its fire-breathing Mazda6 MPS in its second generation. Previously a turbocharged 191kW (256 bhp), 380Nm machine, Mazda will up the figures yet on this hot version of their saloon. Instead of the 2.3-litre giving out 191kW, a new 2.5-litre turbo will spew out a more convincing 209kW (280+) bhp. Those horses will be directed through to all wheels, like the previous generation model, driven by a 6-speed gearbox. Mazda has also been experimenting with double-clutch technology, so perhaps this will debut on 6 MPS. The 0 – 100km/h time should be dispatched in some 6 seconds, with a top speed of 250km/h.
It is said Mazda will unveil the car’s concept alias at this year’s Paris Motor Show later in October 2008, with the production version slated for 2010. Several other versions should also get MPS treatment, including estate, coupe and cabriolet.
Not to sit back on big brother’s laurels, Mazda2’s MPS super light cracker is planning its own entry into the league of fast hatchbacks. Using the same 1.5-litre engine as the normal car, a turbo will give boost to suit Mazda2 up to the tune of 130 odd kiloWatt, a little shy off what Corsa OPC/VXR and MINI Cooper S JCW are capable of but still quite competent in this league.
