Porsche Cayman Turbo Returns to the Ring?
Possible Porsche Cayman Turbo spy photo / BridgeToGantry.com

The omnipresent Jalopniks have tipped us off to some interesting spy photos which were taken by BridgeToGantry.com, a site dedicated to all things about the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Wearing Ludwigsburg license plates, which indicates an official Porsche AG car, BTG spotted this Porsche Cayman doing some hot laps. What was interesting was not it's appearance but rather its sound. BTG photographer gives an account of hearing the distinct sound of a turbo engine as this Cayman flew past.

BTG states they have seen a similar Cayman prototype making the same noise a year ago, but it's back. A turbo charged Cayman making somewhere in the neighborhood of 340hp would be a serious threat and outperform its older sibling, the 911. Known for being lean and well balanced, a Cayman Turbo would absolutely cannibalize 911 sales and Porsche knows it. According to BTG, privateer teams last year who were using the Cayman were suddenly upgraded to, “money-can't-buy factory-backed RSR 911s.”

I'm pretty sure that's nothing more than a facelift prototype.

A cayman turbo would be a great handler and probably a faster car than the 911 Turbo(depending on how much hp)but i would still always buy the 911Turbo, the engine lay-out isnt as good as the Caymans, but its a classic Porsche.

sorry if it turns out to be something really abvious...but wats Isd? this thing is going to be great...but i doubt they will build it. the 911 is porsche's icon car. it wont do if it gets beaten by its supposed younger brother.

Another viewpoint is what will happen to the next generation BMW Z4M coupe. The rumor is there will be a uprated version (about 350hp)of the current 3.0L I6 TT used by the 330i. Current Cayman engine is 3.4L. With twin-turbo, theoretical minimal output should be 100hp/L (i.e. 340hp). Combine that with direct injection, which has both horsepower and fuel saving properties. In the future, with higher strength material, 120hp/L for TT should bethe norm. Also, Cayman engine displacement will be increased with Carrera's engine size increases.

I think that it's time for them to upgrade their line and let go of their very very old porsche 911's.
