I think Nissan's VR38DETT has a legitimate shot this year, especially since BMW's twin turbo'd straight six currently holds the title. The GT-R's V6 has more power & torque, and less lag due to it's innovative integrated turbos. There are loads of other trick bits too like wet/dry sump oiling and plasma coated cylinder bores.

the LS9 is also a marvel of technology. Compared to bmw engines, Chevy LS engines offer weight savings and are all around more compact then most engines in their class. The LS9 for instance incorporates its supercharger right into the block.

good luck to all candidates.
The awefull BMW-engines are effective and highend perfected. Nissan build a powerful mashine, that isn't easy to top. But the american LS9 is an engine, that dosn't will fit the contest of the others. It's great reduced in it's weight and length and it's longholding technique (for an american engine) So all cann win that prize. You will see :)

I believe the engine has to actually be in production. Maybe next year.

The S65B40 V8 in the M3 is next-gen tech. All other engines mentioned are the best of current generation technology.

I wonder how Porsche motor get overlooked all the time in this contest? When you can wring 500hp out of a 3.6L flat 6, to me that's impressive...
