Audi South Africa has put prices on its newly launched A5 and S5 darlings. The two coupes give Audi entry into the two door saloon market where Mercedes-Benz and BMW already play quite well with their CLK and 3 Series coupes. Interestingly while the A5 is longest of these three, the BMW has the longest wheelbase. Volvo is still trying to have a crack at this class with the S60 CC as well. “The A5’s sporty appearance, high quality materials and levels of driver engagement mark the beginning of a new era for Audi in this competitive segment of the market.” says Greg Levine: Divisional Head of Audi SA.
Only two models with a total of three derivatives are available. The first is the 3.2-litre Quattro with its 195kW and 330Nm motor which uses a Tiptronic transmission to go from 0 – 100km/h in 6.4 seconds. Fuel consumption is 9.3-litres per 100 kilometres. It comes in at R454,000/ USD55,876.
The second model is the R549,000/ USD67,569 6-speed manual S5 moved by the 4.2-litre V8 whose power is advanced from the old mill’s 253kW to 260kW. Torque is more than RS 4’s at 440Nm. It is said the V8 FSI motor will propel the S5 to 100km/h, from standstill, in 5.1 seconds. The Tiptronic version of the S5 costs R562,000/ USD69,169.
