BMW has today announced that it will allocate USD 750 million to its Spartanburg plant in North Carolina, USA. The plant will grow by 60% to 370,000 m2, creating 500 new jobs and raising production capacity to 240,000 units. All of BMW's X models (X3, X5 and X6) will be built at the plant for the world market.
"Centralizing our know-how for BMW X models in Spartanburg will enable us to work even more efficiently going forward. In addition, it was a logical step for the BMW Group as a global player to increase production capacity in its largest market," said BMW AG Board Member Frank-Peter Arndt.
The three-year construction job includes 112,000 m2 of assembly facility in order to build the next gen BMW X3 there.
In 1992, BMW announced that their first plant outside of Germany would be in Spartanburg, SC and BMW was prepared to pour USD 600 million into the operation. To date, BMW has invested USD 4.2 billion (including the USD 750 million) into the Spartanburg plant, employs 5,400 workers and produced 157,530 units in 2007.
