Audi A4 Avant Debuts in Geneva

Audi A4 Avant Debuts in Geneva
The all-new Audi A4 Avant at the Geneva Motor Show!

All details

Following the official announcement of the Audi A4 Avant less than one month ago, the estate version of Audi's best selling mid-sized sedan has made its first public appearance at the Geneva Motor Show. With already 33,000 customers waiting for their cars, the all-new A4 range has sold well as it battles head-to-head with Mercedes' recently launched C-class.

The Avant has grown a startling 12 cm from its predecessor (to 470 cm), boosting a spacious luggage compartment of 490 liters. But thanks to its lightweight steel body the A4 has shed roughly 10% of its weight and weighs 1,470 kg (3,240 lbs). As the A4 Avant goes on sale in the spring in Germany and other European markets, the engine selection will be the following:

Petrol engines

  • 160 hp 1.8-liter TSI - 250 Nm
    • 8.9 s. acceleration (0 - 100 km/h) - 218 km/h
    • 7.2 liters / 100 km (32.67 mpg)
  • 265 hp 3.2-liter V6 - 330 Nm
    • 6.4 s. acceleration - 250 km/h
    • 9.1 liters / 100 km (25.85 mpg)*

Diesel engines

  • 143 hp 2.0-liter TDI - 320 Nm
    • 9.7 s. acceleration - 208 km/h
    • 5.7 liters / 100 km (41.27 mpg)
  • 170 hp 2.0-liter TDI - 350 Nm
    • 8.6 s. acceleration - 224 km/h
    • 5.8 liters / 100 km (40.55 mpg)
  • 265 hp 3.0-liter TDI - 500 Nm
    • 6.3 s. acceleration - 250 km/h
    • 7.1 liters / 100 km (33.13 mpg)*

* = quattro

The entry-level 120 hp 1.8-litre TFSI will be available in the fall and retail at 27,550 euros. The must have option on this car is the "xenon plus" head light system, which includes the already famous LED daytime running lights, consisting of 14 white dots. Stay tuned for our pics from the Geneva Motor Show.

The most attractive midsize station wagon

The new Audi A4 Avant

Audi advanced into new dimensions with the A4 sedan. In just a few weeks the A4 Avant—the sportiest, best-looking mid-sized station wagon on the market—will follow. In addition to impressive handling characteristics and a captivating feel of quality, the Audi A4 Avant also offers a practical bonus for sports and recreation enthusiasts: Its dynamic, elegant bodywork conceals up to 1,430 liters (50.50 cubic ft) of cargo space and numerous well thought-out details.

In terms of technology, the A4 Avant is based on the same layout as the sedan; its newly developed five-link front axle has been shifted far to the front. The advantage to this design is a more balanced axle load distribution that offers maximum handling precision and agility and takes driving into a new dimension. The Avant also delivers the emotion-packed, sporty driving experience that has prompted the automotive press to immediately dub the sedan the best midsize car on the market.

The Audi A4 Avant is making its start with five powerful engines: three TDIs and two gasoline units. The fuel consumption of these engines has gone down by an average of 14 percent over previous models. Also demonstrating the typically high level of Audi technological expertise are the wide array of drivetrains and numerous luxury-class technologies that enhance the sportiness and comfort of the model.

Sales of the A4 Avant will begin in the spring throughout Germany and in other European markets. The basic price of the Audi A4 Avant is €27,550, which applies to the 88-kW (120-hp) 1.8 TFSI to be available in the fall.

wow... the diesel engine (170hp) looks promising comparing to the petrol counterpart and the entry-level diesel. I find it quite funny when people pronounce "diesel" in American accent "de-ssle" instead of "dee-zle". Also WCF, it's "litre", not "liter".

pscs: I usually type litre but obviously depending on where you're located (UK vs. US), you might call it a liter. In this case, Audi consistently referred to the engine displacements using the liter spelling. We try to cater to all continents but either way, we're bound to get it wrong. :-) But you're right, the 170 hp diesel looks very promising!

I hear Germans speaking British English pronouncing dee/ssle; but as a New Yorker I say and primarily hear "deezle."

I've read in the local AutoMotorundSport that the basic 140+hp diesel is well worth a look even if it doesn't make a rocket out of the A4. The tester even said, that with this engine the (sedan) A4 is more excellent than the 320d!

I've been to the AMI in Leipzig yesterday and got there in a A4 2.0 TDI 170hp sedan. Quite an interesting car, I think, although it's strange how you find yourself approaching a car in front of you in a line and then stare at the shape of your bling LED daytime lights. Good drive, the 170hp diesel is quick enough and a brilliant piece. Consumption is of course 0.1 litres up from the 141bhp version. At the AMI itself I later got a look at the Avant and must say that - given you have seen the A4 - 3 series and C class estates just don't cut it. Designwise. The dash in the C class in fact felt exactly like the material found in a LPG Skoda Octavia. For fifteen grand more.

I find it funny when "diesel" is pronounced with the "z" sound instead of the "s" sound. Language is alive therefore is right when it fits the need, culture, etc where it is used. I say poe-tay-toe! okay?
