Our people inside the corridors of power at BMW have sent us one of two interesting messages regarding the strength of the next top-of-the-range X5.

Firstly, the sources say the vehicle will not be named iS as have been previously, although this is not yet confirmed even within BMW itself. However, what has been let out the bag as the proverbial cat, is how talented the X5 king will be on tar.

Brandishing the same 4.4 V8 petrol with two turbos strapped to it as what we’ve seen in the X6 xDrive 50, the X5 promises to take us to 405kW/ 543 bhp and over 700Nm of supplied torque. The engine has obviously been remapped and tweaked to supply these astounding SUV numbers. Zero to 100km/h may be a matter settled in around 5 seconds with the normal top speed limited to 250km/h. Power will go to all four wheels via xDrive, which is claimed to be the fastest-reacting 4x4 system in the world.

700Nm in a SUV? That's madness.

..wonder if it would be possible to shoehorn that engine into the 135 :P

Wasnt BMW talking all this s*** about how MB was "cheating" with their supercharged 5.5L V8? Now, CAFE has changed the game up for everyone!

Hehe 5s to 62mph??? The ML63 AMG is capable of that right now!!! Well there is already rumors about supercahrged or turbocharged version of ML63 AMG...I think it is the V8 Kompressor badge on a side trim.....it will have around 650hp and 900Nm!!! Sound will be compared with a helicopter or a bomber! To 62mph it will go in low 4s...top speed will be electronically restricted because of tires to 186mph...300kmh!!!

That info is incorrect, the engine only develops 304 kw and not 405. This the same engine launched with the new X6.

That's exactly what I said in the last article about this mule. It's just the next V8 X5. The X5 XDrive50i. Where do they find these "insiders"?

Merc ML AMG is not at all quick enough to even smell the Jeep SRT V8 super charged aka the quickest SUV in the world. Merc has always fallen short of being in the top 3 in SUV's when it comes down to performance. Yes they do make their SUV's look bullish but they are really pap when it comes to laying the power into tar (cheap ancient technology). The Porsche Cayanne sport is also no where near as fast as the 5 seconds (sorry broer) the Jeep SUV is the only one at the moment achieving those times. BMW didn't cry foul to Merc super charging remeber that BMW uses Turbos and small ones for that matter with no Turbo lagg. All others who have been using turbos or chargers have lag, Why (inferior technology). Merc uses huge gallons of cc just to get to BMW or Audi's abilitys to wring power from low cc. 4.4 litre turbo compared to 5.5 super chraged - do the maths. Mercs so called V12 super charged SL amg 6.5 litre is still licking it's wounds from the M5 beating and M6 over a quater mile dash. It's claimed 4.4secs over 100m is on the Dyno onl, come the real track test The bemoth sized Merc fell on it's big chin.

Yeah, I remember reading about a smug press release where a BMW insider speculated that "anyone can make big HP numbers with forced induction...but its an art to pull big numbers from a NA engine." However, this was right before the 745 dropped, and the game has changed significantly since then.

I don´t believe in this "over-accurate" horse power specifications (543.xyz hp). First of all we will see a regular X5 50 with 408 hp. All other informations from within the BMW headquarter are highly speculative. Perhaps in 2011...
