Bob Lutz Says Global Warming is a "Total Crock of Sh**"

Bob Lutz Says Global Warming is a Total Crock of Sh**
GM's Chevy Volt / GM

Popular public opinion says otherwise

The “Green” movement will take this as a huge slap in the face from the biggest car manufacturer in the world. GM’s vice chairman, Bob Lutz, was quoted at a recent closed-door session with some invited journalists as saying that Global Warming was a “total crock of ****”. He also added that Hybrid cars like those made by Toyota “make no economic sense”, and that Diesel automatic cars such as those being pushed by Chrysler are only successful in Europe due to diesel being half the price of gasoline.

His comments come on the back of record losses posted by the auto giant. GM posted a huge $38.7 USD billion loss in 2007. Clearly GM need to remodel their business strategy and it does bring into question whether Lutz has become detached from the car buying public.

The jury is still out regarding Global Warming and its causes, but comments such as these are flying in the face of the general public’s opinion. Lutz may be missing the point from a business perspective, many people want to buy green, and they want to be seen as upstanding citizens doing their bit to reduce CO2 and greenhouse gases. So while many Japanese and European manufacturers are providing a choice of alternative power sources such as advance Diesels and Hybrids, is GM set to flounder with its current US line up of gas slurping SUV’s or will Lutz allow development of innovative technologies such as the Chevy Volt in the future?

I agree that global warming is not all it is made out to be. That said, it isn't unreasonable to ask that cars are more efficeint and less costly to produce (and to buy retail). If the green movement is gettingcar makers from being less lazy then it is doing some good. And diesel is not half the price of petrol in Europe, it is 2/3rds the price at best or, as in the UK, MORE expensive. But obviously the engines show greater fuel efficeincy. These kind of metrics can be changed overnight if the taxation on the fuel types is flipped however.

Lutz is of Swiss descent. Finally a high ranking car industry figure comes out and tell the world about these so-called 'next generation' cars are the Toyta Prius what they really are; A CROCK OF SHXT that has the usable range of a wind-up toy car and the price of a top of the line S-Class. Toyota lost money on everyone made! I agree that new cars should use less fuel, produce less harmful gas emissions, and be more recycable. But the new EU legislations (current in force and those being proposed) are just madness!!

well none of the hybrids make money when they first come out, thats not the point, it's to get the technology out in public use, and eventually, like the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner, the hybrids will start making money.

Finally, someone with a strong voice has my opinion. I will try from now on to only buy GM products. (Even if global warming was real, and a concern... it would beat the heck out of these 50 below winters I am having)

Mr Lutz is an IDOT..Jackass..See how much money GM lost ?? Toyota or GM..your pick..enough said... I wonder how such dummies get to the top of such large corporations. American are so slow in catching up to the world. Our empire is slowly sinking

Global warming does not mean everywhere gets a climate like Spain, it means weather becomes more extreme- more storms, more droughts. Maybe the jury is still out on it but there is no point polluting just for the sake of it- if the technology is there to improve emissions and economy why not use it. Pollution is harmful to the environment even if global warming isn't true (which is like saying that there's no solid evidence smoking is harmful). And furthermore no-one can argue that oil will run out in the relatively near future. It's incredibly short-sighted to not develop new lower emissions cars.

In fact, GM is so late in its clean cars development that that they had to make a choice... and they did.

Here it goes; Global warming is absolute Bulls**t and it's totally hyped. Also, the world is not running out of gas/oil, there's still lots, just no longer in the prairies of North America. Economically, the whole "green movement" is not doing any good for anybody, it's only making things harder, and more expensive for the wrong people, and the wrong people are reeping the rewards (ie: middle east/ US government). By the way, cars produce less greenhouse gas nowadays than cows! If we want to get rid of greenhouse gases and our expensive dependency, develop and invest in Hydrogen and Nuclear Power. Because as long as India and China are chewing up coal and oil like they are, all you hippies buying you prius' aren't doing anybody any good, you're only occupying another HOV lane.

"The jury is still out regarding Global Warming and its causes". According to whom? This guy probably voted for Bush as well. All wackjobs that need to stop living in the past. The clearly genius comments on this site (puuuuuke) should be taken with a sea of salt, rather than a grain. You are living a false reality meatheads.

I don't believe that global warming is total BS but i do believe that its been blown out of proportion. I think GM is doing right buy making the volt and more hybrids. And this BS about people buying hybrids because they care about the earth and global warming is ridiculous. People buy them cause they want to spent less money on gas so i really wish people would stop praising Prius owners. That being said cars should be made more efficient but the new CAFE standards are to extreme. It requires a change that is too dramatic too quick. It should be raised gradually year to year not in a giant lump some. And cars are just one part of the problem. Why aren't the other industries having these rules enforced on them?

We are all car lovers or we wouldnt be on this site in the first place. However, the truth is our passion does contribute to global warming, that is proven science. Hybrids and soon small clean diesels are a nice step in the right direction until alternatives such as hydrogen become feasible. I doubt people buy them just to look like up standing citizens, as you can get very close to the same mileage for a lot less money(some people actually care about this planet!). Bob Lutz is an out of touch old school fool, who needs to pack up his brief cases full of money and step down. GM has ruined most peoples perception of alternatives by making inferior designed vehicles from diesels in the 80's to the EV 1's.

I didn't say that cars didn't contribute to global warming. I said that there are other things in this world that produce more green house gases that don't have the same regulations imposed on them.

If the average person produces about 4.4 lbs of garbage a day, this adds up to a ton a year... multiply by the average life span of 80 years, and you have the average person producing 80 tons of garbage... now if you have a serial killer who kills 10 people, he just directly saved the earth from 800 tons of garbage (ignoring the subsequent generations that could have been produced). Therefore the serial killer is actually saving the world. What did I really just prove? Anyone can manipulate facts to prove anything they want. Unfortunately people are also paid to manipulate facts for and against global warming so much so that the whole issue is a mess, and no one really knows what is going on.

Cmon you have to be serious, don't tell me you are buying this? Don't you find it funny that this message would come from the head of the least environmentally friendly car manufacturer in the world? I guess garbage and toxic dumping is nothing serious either? Lets face it GM is suffering and this message is suffering too.

Lutz is a typical wealthy arogant politician that worries about today and not tomorrow. The government had to mandate airbags, seatbelts and electronic stability control when foreign manufacturers already had it in their main stream.(Domestic convertible do not even have active or passive rollbars) Oil someday will become very expensive and waiting longer to do something will be very expensive. We do not have an emergency Plan B if suddenly we did not have any oil from the middle east. Climate change or not, we are funding terrorism with our oil dollars to the middle east when they should be riding camels. I think Lutz is completely ignorant and should be a leader and not a follower like the Domestic car companies have become.

I believe that global warming is just another cycle that the Earth is going through. However, I do believe that we are accelerating it and could possibly magnify its effects. Even if global warming turns out to be a sham, we should still promote and invest in greener, safer products and start seriously considering alternative forms of energy (i.e. wind, solar, nuclear, hydrogen).

Damn right! Ride a bicycle: 0L/100km (unless you count Gatorade). More than suitable for 50% of motorists cluttering our urban streets with their filth-on-wheels.
