Volkswagen is considering building a military version of the Touareg?

Volkswagen appears to be building a military prototype of the Touareg SUV. Not much is known about the vehicle, but it seems VW is hoping that the aging military versions of the Mercedes’ G-Class will give them the advantage when seeking defense contracts.

Painted in a matte green and stripped of all its chrome, the exterior would do a good job of not being noticed. Various antennas give the Touareg the upper hand in state of the art communications systems, while numerous recovery hooks at the front and rear allow for easy rescue should the vehicle become trapped in mud or snow. Power would most likely come from Volkswagen’s V10 TDI that has 310hp and 533ft/lbs of torque.

Aging military versions of the Mercedes G-class? Almost 30 year old G is still one of the most capable off-road vehicles around. Touareg is not match for the G.

I'm sure this beast is as capable as it is robust, but aren't military vehicles usually designed by defense firms that specialize in that sort of thing? It seems like a bit of a publicity stunt... I mean, does VW honestly think they're going to be taken seriously by dressing up a Chelsey Tractor in green garb?

No, the Canadian military uses the Mercedes G Wagon for example as well as a heavy lift vehicle made by Mercedes. Some vehicles are made by defense-specific firms while others are variants. This is common. A vehicle like this would be employed for general use and not necessarily combat, though an armoured variant would likely be designed.

the austrian army ordered about 135 touaregs, in military green but without armour, they should replace some old puch-G (also known as mercedes G).

Highly unlikely since this is the pre-facelift version.

As "Penner" already pointed out: this story ist as old as it gets. You can see it easily because the T-Reg in the photos ist a pre-facelift model. Furthermore: the german army rejected the car (projectname:"Frettchen"=ferret) because it literally broke apart during the tests. So: no T-Reg for the Bundeswehr...but we'll wait for the new "Robust"-Pick-up and its SUV-brother...they might fit.

Anyone who thinks this vehicle is soft is ignorant, forgetting that it's offroad capability is better than most off-roaders, even on street tires. This has been proven many times. The only concern I'd have is durability... It may need that V10 TDI to pull a trailer full of spare parts. I HOPE the Touareg 2 updates have really improved reliability, but performance-wise, the Touareg is a great choice.
