Lights off. Cameras. Go, go, go! Sounds like a Murray Walker comment but on September 26 it will be a reality in Singapore when the first ever Formula One night race weekend takes place there.

The FIA has finalized the times for all sessions. Friday practice has been slotted for between 16:00 to 17:30 local time, while the second session will run from 20:00 to 21:30. Saturday final practice will be between 17:00 to 18:00 and qualifying will happen at 20:00. On race day, Sunday 28, the race will blast off at 20:00 to a trail of floodlights and possibly flashlights. You can work out exactly what time it will be in your area.

Check out these artists’ impressions of how it might look. Don’t be puzzled though, the cars themselves will not be fitted with headlights, and drivers will rely solely on lighting provided by the venue. Some of the drivers have already indicated that they have no problem racing at night, as long as lighting is adequate.

It will also be a good run for the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, Formula BMW Pacific and other events. For those of you who are well-heeled, 30 percent of corporate suites are still available, while three-day and single-day passes will start selling from mid-February. This could be the same day as Valentine’s Day, so concerns like personal-safety, avoiding the couch for a week and a week’s silent treatment will come into play here.

largely inspired by the PC game Need For Speed UNDERGROUND ? or should I say the pressing need for Singapore to burn the candle at both ends by wasting electricity and massively polluting the air at the same time ? whoever callously thought of this profligate gimmickry ought to be burned at the stake using premium grade fuel that this person/s are putting into waste.

the Singapore government should summarily incarcerate the organizers of this eco-unfriendly roadshow the way it punishes an ordinary person for spitting chewing gum on the city's "immaculately clean" pavement.

on second thought , that may not happen at all because Formula One Constructors Association pours a lot of dough into the Singapore government's coffers unlike the ordinary man on the street.
