Spotted in the Snow

In a sight that Volkswagen no doubt hopes will soon be a common one, the new Passat CC has been spotted frolicking in the snow sans camouflage, just days after its world introduction in Detroit.

The new premium sedan's "coupe-sedan" styling has sparked obvious comparisons to the Mercedes CLS.  It's unlikely that the Passat CC will go head-to-head with the Mercedes, however.  Underpinnings are shared with the standard Passat, but VW says the luxurious four-passenger interior and sporty driving dynamics will provide a wholly different driving experience.  A three-mode active suspension promises both comfort and athletic abilities.  VW's 1.8, 2.0 and 3.6 liter direct-injection gasoline engines will provide power, worldwide with common-rail turbodiesels offered in Europe.   A seven-speed DSG transmission is also a Europe-only option.

The unclad Passat CC seen here seems to be one of the more basic models.  Uplevel versions will get flagship-like appointments including a panoramic sunroof, lane departure mitigation system, self-sealing tires and a park-assist control.  The Passat CC goes on sale in Europe in the second quarter of 2008, with North American sales beginning in the fourth quarter.

VDub should also offer the 3.0 VR6 TDI from the Touareg, A4, and Q7 in the Passat and this CC as well, they would probably sell many of them...

I would prefer this over any supercar, really! It makes you want just have a normal life, a good job and a nice family. For the holiday-trips you then take this car. Awesome!

@nickkop The 3.0 TDI is going to be offered soon in the US, in the Touareg, Q7 and hopefully in the A5, too. Thats why I personally think, they shouldnt offer the engine in the Passat CC, its going to draw buyers away from the A5.

I don't understand how this car is any different from the regualar Passat except styling. Is there really room for both? Won't they just esentially steal sales from each other? Don't get me wrong, I like the CC's styling, but go with one or the other.

@Dsc_off The Mercedes CLS didnt steal sales from either E- or S-Class. It opened a new market -space. The question will be, if people are willing to spend that much money for a "comfortable" Passat - as it was with the Phaeton.

This is a very bland outcom, it ia another Passat. It seems that VW is trapped in the same crisis as Toyota: wants a piece of every segment without being capable of focusing in one thing at a time and Mercedes is following suit. Therefore the automotive leaders now look like this: 1- BMW 2- PORSCHE 3- AUDI 4- NISSAN

The 3.0TDI isn't a VR6, but a V6, this means it cannot be mounted in the Passat because of the transversal mounting of the engine..it just doesn't fit....
