The not-so-elusive BMW X6 was officially unveiled to the United States at the North American International Auto Show. Dubbed a "Sport Activity Coupe," the X6 combines curvy sedan-like styling with the raised ride height and xDrive all-wheel drive system of BMW's X-series vehicles. The expressive styling and 21" wheels help to mask the X6' size at first glance.  A new all-aluminum 4.4 liter twin-turbo V8 produces 400 horsepower and uses direct gasoline injection.  BMW claims a 0-60 time of under five and a half seconds.  A 300-horsepower 3.0 liter twin-turbo straight six is also available.

To improve its sporting characteristics, the X6 features the Dynamic Performance Control chassis control system, an outgrowth of xDrive which varies power front to rear and side to side to maintain stability and traction.

In keeping with the overwhelming environmental theme of this year's Detroit show, BMW also unveiled the ActiveHybrid concept. This X6-based hybrid-electric uses the two-mode active-transmission hybrid system that was jointly developed with GM and DaimlerChrysler.

SUV already means Sport Utulity Vehicle, doesn't it? So why does people want to buy SAV, instead of SUV? Besides assertive design trends are temporary. So I prefer X5.

In a word, WHY? It's like Chris Bangel couldn't decided what he wanted. There is a 5 series tail end on it, little bit of the offroad look of a Volvo Cross Country, then the new X5 in front. So what is it really? Not really an SUV, not really a 5 and certainly not a Volvo. Still it's not really anything special or new. Just weird, I think. I'm entitled to think that right?

I am sorry, but this car has none of the Q7's grace and beauty. It's just as graceful as a sports tank.

Q7's got grace? Hell, it looks like a mountain minibus... Hopefully the upcoming Q5 will be more balanced and sportier. About the X6, a car sculpted such as this can't be judged on 2D photographs, if not the concept itself. And what's so weird about an X5 targeted at wealthy singles or young small families? Bet half of the ppl criticizing this car are just immature or envious, and would get cardiac to find one parked up in their filthy garage, if any!
