Ready for 2009

Again an embargo break, this time the Saab 9-4X BioPower Concept falls victim to the ever-more cut-throat automotive industry. The Dutch AutoTelegraaf have either found these (low res) images on the net or have themselves broken the embargo.

The 9-4X BioPower concept looks production ready, and the newspaper claims that the Saab 9-4X BioPower will go into production this year at GM's plant in Mexico and should go on sale in the USA not much later, Europe will follow in the following months.

The 9-4X will have four-wheel-drive (hence the X) and the concept is powered by a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder turbocharged engine producing 245 hp and 353 Nm torque. If the engine is fueled with E85 Ethanol power increases to 300 hp and 400 Nm torque. The 4WD uses a central placed differential which directs drive power to the front and rear axles, the rear axle also has an intelligent rear-differential to spread power to which ever wheel needs it most.

Stay tuned for official information from the showfloor late next week.

What is this concept based on? A GM US model like the 9-7X was?

Most likely the envoy or some other small class suv. I absolutelly hate the interiors on new saabs. The plastic dash and the low quality leather that feels like recycled toilet paper. And as if that wasnt enough they have some of the ugliest colour combinations and options for leather. If you want to get a Saab that still has that swedish feel of the old ones you have to get the Turbo-x.

If the interior gets better, that would be a great thing. I am ready for more innovation from Saab, so at least this is a start. The front does seem rather nose-heavy though. ~Peace

this looks exceptional good, really, but too much like a big Tiguan. You can see that the previous deisgner at Saab was Michael Mauer, today leading the Porsche design-studios.

This looks a lot like it will be based on the same platform the GMC Acadia, Saturn Outlook and Buick Enclave are all based on which is a good thing. They are all excellent vehicles and so far GM has kept them all looking unique. There is supposedly a Chevrolet version coming soon (the Traverse) as well so seeing this does worry me a bit that five vehicles based on the same platform will dilute the rich gene pool so to speak. GM's badge engineering has earned the company a lot of well deserved bad press in the past and it has been looking recently like they had finally learned their lesson. Hopefully this vehicle is truly unique and doesn't end up being more of the same! Time will tell.
