VW Touareg Cabrio?

VW Touareg Cabrio

Is it a joke or a PR move, or both?

Is it April 1? No, December 28, but in Spain today is the "día de los Inocentes", which is the same Fool's Day. So Volkswagen in Spain decided to make some fun and created an advertisement for the "new Touareg Cabrio", as if it were truly a new model coming. There, you're given three links: Acabados (trim levels), Motores (engines), and Galería (gallery). Then you realize it is a joke, and have an option to forward it to a friend.

On second thought, it is not completely insane to make a joke from the Touareg especially when sister company Audi presented the Cross Cabriolet quattro study in Los Angeles motor show in November. One could think that it is part of real PR trick to feel the public reactions. In Europe, those SUV niches don’t have much future, but in USA they could grab a large consumer group. Few years ago it was impossible to think about an SUV coupe, and now you have one with the BMW X6 confirming it’s time for real surprises in near future.

Who would want BMW X6? Same idea. Why wouldn't people want a convertible SUV? It looks like a high Mercedes CLS. I guess convertible SUV's will be available in the following years.

Actually there is one, called the Jeep Wrangler. Not a convertible really, but removable top, panels, doors, etc. But as good as the Touareg is offroad, I don't think it is that focused enough to pull that off.

Someone has a good sense of humor!

Are people just bored or they are running out of things to do at the design studio!

As someone says, not a new idea: Wrangler, Hummer H1, Land Rover Defender, Mercedes G-Wagen, Toyota Landcruiser, Mitsubishi Shogun... been many times before.

And what chassis dynamics are those you speak of? Most cars of this type rely on electonics to allow them to achieve any mobility at all, so chopping the roof off can easily be countered by chassis strengthening and a software tweak.

What a senseless... Bristol was right, that's not a new idea. I know many Offroad-convertibles (I'm not a fan of the general word SUV for a real Offroader) But a convertible-version of the current Touareg whould be strange in my eyes. If I want a real cabrio, I whould drive a real cabrio. And if I want a open offroader, I whould buy it. But this mixture is senseless. ...but all in all I can imagine, it's not more then a joke :)

28th December is "el día de los Inocentes", or April Fool's day in other countries.

That's a joke!
