Following an interview with Reiner Mangold, the Managing Director of Volkswagen Individual, Automotive News reports VW is currently working on the world's first turbocharged compressed natural gas (CNG) engine.

First used in the Golf Sport, VW will use the small turbocharged 1.4 TSI for the Passat CNG. Power output is expected to be 150hp. With launch early in 2008, the new technology will subsequently be used in the Golf and Touran.

The cost of compressed natural gas is currently less than €0.90 per liter compared to €1.35 for petrol. With the opportunity to save up to 50% on fuel costs, fleet managers are likely to pleased.
