With the development of both the X1 and X3 in full flow it is sometimes hard to tell the difference between the two, but we can now confidently say the test car pictured above is the all new BMW X1.

With these new spy shots we can see the rear side doors are smaller than on an X3 and also the car’s wheelbase appears to be shorter. It has been said the X1 will be sized somewhere between the 1 series and 3 series touring.

The X1 will share the same platform as the upcoming Mini SUV and should be launched sometime in 2010, which is around the same time we also expect to see its main rival - the Audi Q3.

I'll be first here to say that I support BMW's ways...but in this instance, the X1 is pointless. I have commented that X6 rocks; that's because it has a point and will aimed at setting a new standard for a type of vehicle that has never been built plus it supports the call for a hot coupe with AWD clearance (which no-one will ever use but so many soccer mum's like to sit up high and never go off road). So the X1 is too daft, the X3 already earns a "give it a miss" and now BMW is putting something out dealers will cringe to have costing away in their yards. Upgraded X3 is overdue, X1 is pointless as a 1 series convertible. And a MINI SUV? I hope they aim to sell as many as the Clubman which is aimed at nobody, just a left field vehicle that is a waste of dealer training, time, holding demo's and then trying to sell them at below cost as no-one's coming to buy them. Make sense? ;)

I disagree with you. As the world changes and becomes more urbanized, a huge market opens up for smaller vehicles that are able to manuever city streets, are fuel efficient, and are more accessable at a lower price point. If the X3 is about $33-36K, I could imagine the X1 going for 24-28k. A BMW well under 25K? Although I'm a fan of the Tri-star, you better believe it will sell.

BMW X1 would be good for those who sell to youngsters.

I like this prototype's shape. Relatively short, not too tall, beautiful rear hatch, normally-sized wheels... only the engine compartment should be shorter. I hope this car features only four-cylinder engines.

X1? How low is BMW planning to go.. soon they'll be in the negatives. I thought the X3 went pretty low relative to the brand image, as well as the one series and possibly even the 3 series sedan. X1's overdoing it..3 SUV's are enough for a (no longer) high end brand like BMW. It just shows how industries are not caring about even their brand image, just profits, the former which i think is more important (why don't Bentley and Rolls Royce make $30,000 sedans?). This is just plain stupid. At least just dont bring it to the US.

the back screams audi a3 and the front just looks weird. this is a fairly pointless addition to the x-series. hope audi fairs better with their Q1, if nissan let them use the name of course

i never like this era of combining SUV and sedan ( crossdressing ?), i want an SUV or a sedan, not the mix of them

I dissagree to dicedlions. X1 is a new type of product dedicated to all those who want a vehicle who fullfill all the day to day requeriments..I had last X3 ...and its too heavy and too slow for urban traffic....I had 320d E90..and its not useful for mountain roads with snow.I want a veh to make me feel secure in mountain roads , fast and not to big to drive in the city...I will be the first to buy the X1..sure!
