Caught on the set of American cable television show “Sex and the City”, the 2009 Mercedes-Benz GLK Class is wearing no camouflage revealing all of the design details. As a bonus, we also get a glimpse of the beautiful Kim Cattrall, one of the four main characters of the romantic comedy. These photos were shot last Sunday on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills during the filming of the movie-version.

At first sight the new GLK looks like a disguised GL, but in reality this prototype is considerably smaller than Mercedes' full-size sport-ute. Translated, the name GLK basically means "short version of GL" as K is a diminutive of the German "kurz," meaning short. The GLK is using technical components from the all-new Mercedes C-class, and it will keep very close in design to the GL-Class. The GLK could debut as a 2009 model at the North American International Motor Show in 2008. Power is expected to come from a 3.5-liter V6 with Mercedes 4Matic all-wheel-drive standard. All versions are expected to have the 7G-Tronic TouchShift automatic transmission. Later on there could be a V8-powered GLK63 AMG version. While the U.S. is slowly moving away from big SUVs, Mercedes is losing market share to small SUVs like the BMW X3. With this new GLK it is hoping to get back on top again.

and MB didn't even put the US spec fron face on it... not side markers, not in the headlight unit nor in the plastics... and the EU size license plate holder...

to me it looks like the movie plays in the US, not europe... and the back has a US plate on it...

smokeonit1
December 17, 2007 3:48 PM
and the space for the rear licencse plate will be US spec size is my guess, since most MB's have US spec only trunk lids...

not very detail loving....

The BMW X3 is much a better car. Again, it's V6 is no macth against BMW's Straight 6 engine. What an awful car from Mercedes.

"G" goes for "Geländewagen" (German for "off-road vehicle"). The K seems to have worked well, but I prefer a rounder B-Class rather than this white brick on wheels.

GLK looks similar in design to X3, but a little cleaner (no black plastic or bodycolor molding). If pricing and lease deals are attractive, I predict this will be a big seller. Especially for all those "Sex And The City" wannabe women. Guys will look forward to the GLK63 AMG, in black of course.

Ugly piece of kit. Can't have been designed by the same guy who penned the elegant CLS! Can't!

Just realised this grammar error below:

"The GLK will debut as a 2009 model at the Frankfurt auto show in Geneva 2008"

THe Frankfurt autoshow is held in Germany, not Geneva

What a image killer for mercedes. Its not worth having that Mercedes star in the front. It looks like a friggin Suzuki. Such cars will bring profits, but will kill the name and integrity Mercedes has built itself over the years. Btw. thats defenitley a European Spec. version.

I quite like the GLK. It looks much nicer than the X3. It has presence, and I think its very young looking as well. For young people who couldn't afford a M-Class or X5. This will definitely be a car to think about. At least this car doesn't have those cheap plastic that X3 offerred when it was launched.

looking at the comments this seems like a love it or hate it car, well im sorry, but i love it, well i like it, i would drive one, i missed the boxy Mercedes (ie 1986-1995)glad theyre bringing them back, i wonder if it will be abel to go off road or will it be like the bmw x3, which also looks ok, i think they (glk x3) both look good on the same level

The G Class is still the coolest suv that M-B has built. i would have taken design cues from that. BTW the X3 is one of the cheapest looking suvs out there. not up too BMW standards

its probally on a chrysler platform, like the R Class (Pacifica and Minivans) GL and M Class (Grand Cherokee and Comander). The GLK is probaly a Dodge Nitro and Jeep Liberty with a 3 point star instead of a 5 point star.

Im glad they are no longer DAIMLERchrysler. They are going to try and blame this flop on chrysler. but they cant.

December 18, 2007 5:25 AM
wrong, its crossover from the c-class

moparbryce
December 18, 2007 6:26 AM
are you sure? they tried to say that the R Class was new, but it clearly is a Pacifica. This looks similuarly sized to the Nitro/Liberty. And again if it were based of the C Class its just a Sebring.

Looks forced..MB tried to add to many lines, with American fender flares. Not workin, i hate to say it but give me a range rover of this any day Oh, and kinda embarrassing how this was uncovered

wirelesscoyote
December 18, 2007 6:35 PM
Give you a Range Rover?? I am sorry, there is a huge price different. Maybe you can compare the LR2 to this GLK. But not the Range Rover. I would still prefer the GLK to LR2

R-, GL and M-Class do not share a platform with Chrysler vehicles. Next generation would have shared it if DaimlerChrysler would not have split up.

I think it looks great compared to all the other small suv's. I think the new VW Tiguan is ugly, the BMW X3 looks like a toycar made of plastic. This though, looks quite "strong". I like it!

As a Mercedes-Benz dealer, I am glad to see we will have an SUV entry in the small crossover segment. While I am not crazy about the gawky proportions or front-end treatment of the GLK (especially hate the headlights), it will be nice to have something to compete with the RX350, X3, and upcoming EX35 from Infiniti. Because most ML's run about $50k we lose a lot of deals on people wanting an SUV but unwilling to spend more than $40k-$42k.

I did also want to say definitively that no Mercedes-Benz vehicle share parts that came from Chrysler. The easiest way to prove this is that all Mercedes have longitudinal-mounted engines while all Chryslers (save LX-platform vehicles based on last-gen E-class) have transverse-mounted engines. This is because Mercedes are based on rear-drive architectures while Chrysler uses front-drive.

What is with the name, GLK... looks like Gluck! I am sad to see such generic naming conventions from so many excellent marques. I know it should sound related to the G-Wagen, but it seems like a last minute idea. I mean GLX, GLR, GLC, GLS... some thing besides GLK... just my opinion. I do not want a Mercedes Gluck. Yuck!

Peace!

mbeaston, spoken like a true mercedes dealer. the words that spew from your mouth is called propaganda. sugar coat it all you want, there is major parts bin sharing between the two companies. maybe you're a greenhorn in the industry. research your facts. don't believe what they tell you just 'cause they pay your mortgage. let you tell it, mbz is tops in customer satisfaction. this vehicle is hideous and should flop like your precious r. your company sucks, sir.

i like this new SUV from mercedes, boxy shape ( NOT SUV WANNABE ), the rear fender could come from the ocean drive concept, the design is much better than the GL - Class ( Large ML - Class ? )different from other mercedes SUV,it is going to be a great SUV if it has a great engine, go with the next gen engine...x3 ? it is going to get harder for BMW

ok i do agree with that mercedes has to models, i think in 1995(?) they had a good line up, the c class sedan, the e class sedan, coupe, wagon and convertible, the s class coupe and sedan and the sl roadster. I think the New Mercedes models should be the c class sedan, the glk (no need for the c class wagon, but they need to rename it, glk? no, maybe gs? no thats lexus...) the e class sedan, wagon, coupe and cnvertible (no need for the clk it might as well be a e class coupe), the SLK class, and the s class sedan and coupe (why is it named the cl anyway...?) no more gl nor ml because theyre made in america, and no more r class for that reason and all the other obvious reasons agian. The CLS is NOT a coupe it has TWO many doors, the G class should be ordered as it use to be. Also they should keep their cars the same as long as it takes no more rushing cars to compete with overpriced Toyota... i mean Lexus. nothing wrong with a model lasting 9 years if its built right (w124) it just means they took longer to build a better car, but thats just me.

this car is better than X3, i would say it ...,but its not better than Acura RDX, RDX rules both of them , X3 and GLK..:)
