BMW X6 Sports Activity Coupe to Debut at Detroit, New V8 Twin Turbo
BMW X6 Sports Activity Coupe

BMW are to present two defiant worldwide firsts at next month's 2008 Detroit Auto Show. An all-new twin-turbo V8 unit will debut in a vehicle that combines the dynamic appeal of a coupe with the versatility offered only by an SAV. This is a production crossover only BMW could concoct: the mould-breaking X6 Sports Activity Coupe.

Redefining the very coupe concept, the five-door, four-seater X6 is a model fusing the flexibility and powerful presence offered by BMW's high-riding, load-lugging X models with the 'sporting elegance' of a large BMW Coupe.

The X6 Sports Activity Coupe introduces two twin-turbo units to its initial line-up. The X6 sees the debut of a 4.4-litre V8 engine producing 400 hp and 450 lb.-ft. of torque and the inclusion of a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder with 300 hp and 300 lb.-ft of torque for introductory models dubbed xDrive50i and xDrive35i respectively. But further technology features beyond the hood.

Standard with BMW's proven xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the X6 comes with a new feature, named Dynamic Performance Control.  The DPC system not only splits torque between front and rear axles, but also to either left or right rear wheels.  As a result, the X6 delivers improved agility and stability at any speed via the variable distribution and multiplication of torque at each rear wheel, allowing enhanced steering precision and more abrupt turns whether accelerating or decelerating.

The new BMW X6 is expected to arrive at BMW Dealerships in the U.S. second quarter of 2008. Pricing and options will be released in the months preceding. Read on for further details.

THE FIRST-EVER BMW X6 SPORTS ACTIVITY COUPE:
BMW’s All-New X6 xDrive35i and X6 xDrive50i Make World Debuts at Detroit Auto Show in 2008

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – BMW will once again introduce a ground-breaking idea to the world and the creation of a new segment with the debut of its all-new X6 Sports Activity Coupe at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show in January.  The all-new vehicle redefines the very notion of a coupe—with five doors and four sculpted seats, a higher ride and loads of cargo space.  It defies coupe conventions in one jaw-dropping look, combining coupe agility and SAV versatility, taking the coupe to a higher level.

As the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe, the BMW X6 will be available in two engine variants: the xDrive50i (4.4 V8 engine, 400 hp, 450lb.-ft torque) and the xDrive35i (3.0 inline six-cylinder engine, 300 hp, 300 lb.-ft torque), both with Twin Turbo and direct injection.  The BMW X6 offers unique features and performance ability in a combination unmatched by any other vehicle. The new BMW X6’s design combines the sporting elegance of a large BMW Coupe with the powerful presence of a BMW X model.

The BMW X6 comes as standard with BMW’s intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive technology with electronic control for variable distribution of drive power between the front and rear axles, consistently adjusted to driving conditions at all times and in all situations.

Featured for the first time as standard in the BMW X6, Dynamic Performance Control likewise ensures variable distribution of drive forces between the two rear wheels. Dynamic Performance Control incorporates an advanced computer control and an innovative rear differential incorporating two planetary gearsets and two clutch packs that enables the system to multiply torque on an individual rear wheel. The result is that Dynamic Performance Control can help steer the vehicle by directing torque to either of the rear wheels. Unique the world over, this cutting-edge technology is effective whether the driver is accelerating or decelerating and significantly enhances steering precision and, as a result, the agility of the vehicle at any speed. In fast corners with abrupt steering maneuvers or with the driver suddenly releasing the gas pedal, Dynamic Performance Control serves to improve the stability of the entire vehicle, thus allowing the driver to safely enter and enjoy new dimensions of driving dynamics. Finally, on slippery or uneven surfaces,  Dynamic Performance Control provides the further advantage of even safer and more stable traction.

The new V8 engine with Twin Turbo technology and direct gasoline injection, is likewise making its world debut in the BMW X6. Displacing 4.4 liters, this eight-cylinder with maximum engine output of 400 hp and peak torque of 450 lb-ft available over an unusually large range of engine speed from 1,800–4,500 rpm, is the most powerful engine ever seen in a BMW X Model.

The new eight-cylinder is indeed truly impressive not only through its outstanding thrust and pulling force, but also through its compact dimensions. For this is the first eight-cylinder gasoline engine in the world to feature its turbocharger in the V-section between the two rows of cylinders.

Hence, the BMW Sports Activity Coupe is an absolutely exceptional vehicle also beyond the direct range of BMW X Model competitors, ensuring unparalleled performance in all situations, regardless of road and surface conditions.

What the hell is that meant to be?? They can't design, they can't make cars, just remember...bmw were about to bankrupt in 1950's and they asked Mercedes-Benz to help them, unfortunately they didn't, i wish they did.

Once again BMW leads the way with another dynamic vehicle unlike anything else. The X6 is a cracker!! Lets see what Benz comes up with as the will have to do something similar cause they can't help them-selves. Where BMW leads, Benz follows. BMW rules!

RCarvalho, You trying to say the CLS is not good?? You cheap sports guy, all these coupe style saloons and coupe style jeep's all started from Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-Benz are the first to bring this concept in cars, you cheap people, unbeleivable. Just don't put your comments about Mercedes-Benz, they are too high quality for you cheap people.

This car is so rubbish, it's a V8 4.4 Twin turbo, producing 400BHP AND 450LB, is that it?? Mercedes-Benz don't use much turbochargers, their speaciality is to make more higher powerful engines NATURALLY ASPIRATED. That's where quality shines.

Mercedes-Benz, too bad most Mercedes' are about as dynamic as a brick. Back on topic.... BMW had a a good idea, but took it down the wrong road. I can't see this being a very useful car, and it's no where being a very good looking car...

"This car is so rubbish, it's a V8 4.4 Twin turbo, producing 400BHP AND 450LB, is that it??" The 4.4 liter twin-turbo V8 will be BMW's regular V8 engine which is also reported to appear in the next BMW 5-series and possibly also in the next 7-series. (550i and 750i?) As for BMW's real high-performance NATURALLY ASPIRATED powerplants... you might have forgotten BMW''s new 414hp 4.0 liter V8 and 500hp 5.0 liter V10. "Mercedes-Benz don't use much turbochargers, their speaciality is to make more higher powerful engines NATURALLY ASPIRATED. That's where quality shines." Merecedes uses large displacement NATURALLY ASPIRATED engines to generate high horsepower, if not they use a Supercharger(Kompressor) or Turbocharger like the S600's V12 engine. BMW's 5.0 liter V10 makes 500hp, while Mercedes needs a larger 6.2 liter V8 to make 507hp. Mercedes is not known for making high horsepower per liter engines.

To those dissing this X6, it's entertaining how you have so much to say about text and pictures, you haven't even driven one or seen one in the flesh. You also will never come close to inventing something like this and calling it yours. You are nobody's who think bad mouthing something incredible and new is a way to be hero...well no-one cares and in fact we all think you need to get a life. Have you see outside lately? There are real cars like your Xbox has, but oh yeah you need a licence which you don't have cause you're 12. This BMW rocks, a profitable company that has survived wars and competition and they still lead their segment without needing cheap brands like VW or Skoda to pay the bills. This will earn excellent press, impress owners and make dealers heaps of cash. If you can't beat it with something you've made then enjoy it or don't say anything at all and go back to your chess game. Well done BMW, you once again lead the way.

dicedlions, are you Chris Bangles son or what ??..you should have listened to people feedbacks no matter its possitive or negative, dont try to be smart.!! you see this car is awesome,we see this car is ugly, and if you said BMW is better than VW,Audi,i would have laughed at you so hard for your foolish,it all depends on what models and specs, okie?? next time respect people here

that's a lame answer andy, you have proved nothing here except you don't read other peoples comments at all. sure criticism is required, but wording about the vehicle not "how good every other car is" and "BMW have no idea and are ripping the public off", if you write that here including you andy, you seriously need to get a life...you no doubt would be the sort of person who folks like me who actually own cars like this hate because you'd walk up and tell me all about it after you locked your 1989 Corolla.

BMW's X6 is the second SUV Coupe in the world, after the Korean marque, SsangYong Actyon. Still BMW is growing up in this luxury automobile market.

Not sure whether I would want this over a X5. It's less practical, and if you want a coupe, you really should just get the 6 series. Let's face it, you really can't use an X5 or X6 off-road but you can use the X5 as a practical "estate". I'm struggling to see the point of the X6 though.

This car, like the X5, is just for show. Looks like a winner to me.
