Factory Five Do-It-Yourself GTM Supercar

 Factory Five Do-It-Yourself GTM Supercar
Factory Five GTM Supercar

This is not a car for the faint-hearted. In fact, if the phone book is your first port of call at the first sign of any mechanical ailment, then look away now. But for the more daring enthusiast with money to burn, Factory Five might have just what you've been looking for: a build-it-yourself supercar.

The firm describe the GTM concept as that which offers a modern, well-engineered supercar at a price all can afford - the catch being self-assembly and the provision of your own GM-based running gear.

Priced at $19,990, the GTM kit includes all components not donated from the Corvette the car is built from, but that is by no means the complete cost. Parts needed to complete the kit can be obtained from any 1997-2004 Corvette or ordered new from GM, with the total cost estimated at $30,000 if built from a "donor" C5 and paintwork is done by the customer. However, Factory Five estimate most kits will cost up to $40,000 to complete inclusive of Chevrolet parts, wheels/tires, paint and the Porsche transaxle, while between 250-300 (est.) manhours will be required by the average builder.

The firm's demo car was developed by Factory Five's engineering department and built with parts acquired from a 1999 Corvette C5. However, it is powered by a crate GM Performance Parts 500 hp Z-06 engine as used in the current Corvette of the same name, costing $13,000 in 2006. The total cost of this vehicle was $61,733, although few performance details have been released bar a 0-100 mph time of 6.6 seconds. Standard kits featuring a 350 hp Corvette unit are expected to have a 0-60 mph time of in the mid-3s and a 1/4 mile time of around 11 seconds.

The GTM resounds around Factory Five a lot like the supercar personification of the American dream, with the firm proudly touting its 100% American design and production process. For more information, head over to factoryfive.com.

Well, it has me interested. The cool thing about kit cars is the fact that you can build/design them around a 800hp twin turbo engine. Now if only I had the money haha.

This car would definitely be more unique, but everyone loves the Eleanor... If you like looks more, go with the mustang, if you prefer performance go with factory five.

i think i will end up going with this, because i want the perfomance. i want to be able to keep up with at least a ferrari f430 or maybe a 599GTB, plus when its built and ready to go i will know that i built this car and my time and love will have gone into it, and also i'll get ferrari performance without the cost and maitnence fees!!!

I would do the Gt500, find a real GT500 somewhere in a field and do it up right. Acid dip the whole package, Roush crate engine. At the end of the day you have to decide, do you want a toy or a piece of american history. 10 years down the road the GT500 will net you a profit where as this you would have a hard time selling.

no dis-respect radmeister but right now i'm looking for a sportscar that i can have fun in, so i guess i am looking for a toy, because when all is said and done with this car i'm gonna rip the shit out of it, and i think that if i were to really track down a real gt500 and do it right that i would be too afraid to let into it on a daily basis, and be too worried about the historical value of it. i think i'll get a gt500 when i'm older and maybe get into collector cars.

Here is a picture of one that won a Best in Show award at the 2007 SEMA show in Vegas just recently. You can do these "cheap" or you can go all out. I personally like the "race prepped" version that they have on the factory five gallery site. That's what I'm going to do with the one I'm currently building. http://www.ffcobra.com/forums/showthread.php?t=168968
