After acquiring plans and sketches for a new MINI Cooper killer AutoWeek magazine in the Netherlands published these artist's renderings of the future model. The Alfa Romeo Junior will be unveiled to the public at the next Geneva autoshow.

Alfa Romeo is expected to produce 75,000 of the model per year, putting it in direct competition with the Audi A1 and the MINI Cooper.

Priced in the 20,000 Euro range - quite a bit more than its competition - the Alfa Romeo Junior should get a 1.4 liter engine with an optional turbo charger, producing between 104 and 178 horsepower, according to the magazine.  A 1.8 liter turbo maxing out at 227 horespower shuould see production come up as well as a 1.6 liter JTD diesel engine banging out anywhere from 118 to 148 ponies.  We had hoped this car would have rear wheel drive, but that is likely not the case.

The three-door Junior should be in the area of four meters long, making it 22.3 centimeters shorter than the Alfa Romeo 147.  As the magazine points out, the renderings also show some styling touches from the 145, with tail lights originating on the 8C Competizione.

The car is expected to hit production in Spring 2008, and land on Italian showroom floors in June.  Other European countries should be able to take deliveries in the fall.  Rumor has it a convertible Alfa Junior may be on the way as well.

It's in the different segment from Golf. Golf is a C-Segment car. This and the Mini are B-Segment cars.

is it just me or is it just wrong to keep comparing cars to a mini, mini has its own culture and its own sense of style that not any other car has, plus its known to be a respected classic name for a car..

this car will have a very bright future if they dont change too much from the concept pic we have seen over here, the back tailights would be little bit more stylish if they dont make them cycle,i like alfa romeo design, pure Italian,Volvo C30,Golf,BMW 1 series,Audi A3, GTI...this market is getting very interested, small car, fast wheels..:)

Have you read the article? This car will be in the same class as Mini and the future A1 which are B-Segment cars (such as Polo, Jazz/fit, Yaris, Clio...). The cars you mentioned are all C-Segment cars.

I don't think its neccessarily wrong to compare it to the mini. Even though Mini does have their own culture Alfa Romeo wants to have a car that competes with that and maybe steal a few potential Mini buyers. Which maybe a little difficult since the Alfa Romeo may cost more.

I think alfa is scheduled for a comeback in the US in late 2008, as for this stealing customers from Mini yeah right......This thing will depreciate soooo fast, quality wont be anywhere near the mini. No point in even comparing it to any of the european cars. Might take on nissan, honda, toyota. I dont know if i would buy this car, when you buy a small car you are looking for reliability and fuel consumption, something the italians have never heard about.

erm... Mini quality is crap, my bro had one for 4 years, eventually head gasket blew and his new GTi coming next week. My best mate also got one and it's not reliable either. Better looking than the Mini, will drive nicely according to Alfa who are to finely tune the Grande Punto's basic set up and change suspension etc. It would be ignorant to compare this to any japanese car; this is designed as a direct rival to the Mini. They want to be battling for the same customers. Personally, I would take this over an ugly, over-hyped, tedious, boring (the joke died long ago) Mini. If Alfa can deliver the level of drive quality they were aiming for, this will be a seriously good motor, and sexy too!

There's another competitor instead of Alfa Romeo. Audi will be also launching the A1 as the Mini-rival car. The Alfa Romeo will use the same underpinnings of the latest successful Fiat 500.
