The R-designated big cat is back. And packing increased power, uprated looks and a host of expected enhancements over the standard XF, the R version will have its sights firmly set on de-throning the M5. These first spy shots, taken by a car magazine photographer, reveal the first prototype XF-R to not be a modified from an S-Type-based XF mule. They follow the car's Frankfurt debut and first production roll-off just yesterday.

Using a further tuned version of the V8 model's 416 hp 4.2-litre supercharged unit with higher boost pressures, the XF-R is expected to gauge power of nearer to 500 hp. With the 0-62 mph sprint from the present supercharged unit achieveable in just 5.4 seconds, expect M5 levels of performance for the XF-R. Uprated R suspension and brakes will feature in addition to an upgraded styling package.

In these spy shots, the game is given away for Jaguar somewhat clearly, with quad exhaust pipes featuring where the standard model boasts only two, a blackened front mesh grille and a noticeably lowered ride height. Residing under arches designed to cater for larger wheels, there are attractive 20" rims, behind which lie R ventilated discs. According to car's photographer, this XF sounded like no other XF he had ever photographed. Unsurprisingly, when approached by the magazine, Jaguar refused to comment.

With standard models hitting the market in March, the tuned XF-R won't be seeing the light of day just yet, with sales expected to start early 2009 with a possible late '08 motor show debut.

I noticed this before, could it be that Jaguar rear ends look similar to Aston Martin rear ends lately?

Yea Jaguar seems to be using Aston Martin as some sort of role model. The side profile of the XK looks very similar, almost identical to that of the DB9 although Jaguar clamis that it was purely "original". Jaguar's new idea of a design theme echoes that of Aston Martin's and some of it just seems to be pure stupid whim.

comparing it to an Aston Martin is no bad thing is it? It's like saying "I don't like my girlfriend, she looks like Cameron Diaz" lol. What's this going to cost, £30-40k in the UK? Cheaper and more practical, an Aston for the middle-classes!?

If it looks like a Aston Martin this is because the design of the DB9, Ian Collum is now the Designer Director at Jaguar. He moved over there in 1999. Since cars take so long to go from concept to reality this is the second car he has done behind the XK

I don't think this should come as a surprise at all since the XKs all look like DB series cars or the other way around. I wanted to say in this day and age of 520+ HP, how can you say you are playing with the big boys when you cannot even reach this 500HP mark? Just look at the new RS 6! Jag needs some real power

Looks like an Audi... It's a sad attempt by Jaguar to keep up on style. They seem to be only good at making classy sadans and coupes. But hey,you can blame it on Ford for giving them such a low budget.

Watch out, Audi! Jaguar makes RWD cars, and with the backing of cash-rich Tata, i expect Audi will be slaughtered! Benz, Bmw and Cadillac, you guys better watch out!

You are joking? The regular XF costs around £35k. This will probably cost around £55k
