More individuality

More individuality

Don't be afraid, this Frankensteinian look on the Mercedes S Class is purely for testing purposes. But testing for what? We reckon that Daimler AG is running preliminary tests on the streets of Stuttgart for a new Maybach.

Maybach has never performed as well as Daimler had hoped, selling just 32 vehicles in Germany in 2006, but the German manufacturer has not given up hope on the ultra-luxury brand just yet.

Recently a special, officially one-off but rumoured to be a limited edition, Landaulet version of the Maybach 57 was shown at the Middle East Motor Show in Dubai. And only last week Brabus catapulted the 57 around Nardo to set the ultra-luxury class speed record at 330,6 km/h.

The current line-up of Maybach are all based on the Mercedes S Class, but with this new addition Maybach is set to receive a more individual design to distinguish itself more from th 'regular' luxury of the Mercedes brand.

The ultra-luxury market has been flailing (direct competitors like the VW Phaeton and Rolls-Royce Phantom are no big sellers either) except for the Bentley GT and Flying Spur have booked success. And it is those customers that Maybach, just like Rolls-Royce, will be targeting with a new model.

Another thing, I don't think the VW Phaeton is a competitor to the Maybach (???), and the Franksteyn-car is probably the new S-Class Pulluman 600, introduced earlier this year.

The pullman 600 was revealed a while ago, no point in testing somethin that already came out. And they probably meant direct competitors in the ultra luxury market in general.

i have to agree. this rendering is plain rubbish! it doesnt even warrant a web intro. its just a mish mash of a merc s class and cls. it still looks ugly as a result. i think we can all safely assume the next maybach will NOT look like this. ps the maybach of now is woefully ugly anyway.

Got to agree with marsman, what we see in the second photo is just a stretch S-class. It's not the first for MB though, they have had stretch limos in Europe for a long time.

I think it looks pretty nice except for the ugly headlights. Much more fresher than the current one, and a less ugly side profile as well.

Mercedes doesn't make limos, pullman does and they dont desguise them. Lincoln doesnt make limos either they are made by privatelly owned coach companies that buy the car from lincoln and then chop it and extend it. The new maybach i would hope has atleast LED headlights, and the rear and front would have to be completely new because the front and rear of the old model have already been implemented into the C and S class.

Actually, Mercedes have and do manufacture limos. The original Mercedes 600 Pullman was made by Mercedes, as is the modern S600 Pullman and other Mercedes long-wheelbase models and of course the Maybachs. The Pullman company was an American company that never had anything to do with Mercedes or any other car makers as far as I know. The Pullman Company (later the "Pullman-Standard Car Manufacturing Company") produced cars as in railway cars.

Are you sure? I couldn't find a limo on the mercedes site or at a dealer, they do produce the armoured vehicles. But i couldnt find any info on stretch limousines.

As I said before, in terems of true luxury and refinement, the Rolls-Royce still has the benchmark in class, despite Maybach. The formula of Rolls-Royce is unmistakable.
