Volkswagen's cleanest diesel ever - the aptly-named all-new Jetta TDI Clean Diesel - has been unveiled today at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The new engine will be available from late next year in both sedan and estate 2009 Jetta models, with 'real-world' fuel efficiency, significantly-reduced emissions and Volkswagen's renowned longevity and vehicle dynamics.
The new Clean Diesel TDI engine is Volkswagen's cleanest ever diesel unit, able to meet the most stringent Tier II/Bin 5 standards and be sold in all fifty US states. Nitrous oxide emissions are reduced by up to 90 percent through the installation of an NOx storage catalyst which is treated periodically by the engine management system. A particulate filter reduces emissions to the standard of gas models.
The common rail four-cylinder 2.0-litre diesel unit with high pressure injectors produces 140 horsepower and 235 lbs.-ft of torque, providing drivers greater driveability and smoothness over previous Volkswagen diesel motors. 'Real world' fuel economy is improved by in excess of 30 percent over a comparable petrol-powered model, while reliability and Volkswagen's 'fun to drive' dynamics are not hampered.
Sales will begin in the third quarter of 2008, entering the market as a 2009 model year vehicle. Prices are yet to be confirmed.
