Yeah a V10 maybe, like upcoming BMW M3 csl will have a v10 from M5/M6.

Only gasoline V12 Audi owns is Lambo V12. My understanding is that the chassis for the A5 will underpin the next A4. Car-lover, you're telling me this manufacturer, whose job it is to make a profit, is going to engineer a high-cost, low-volume engine into the small engine bay of an entry level luxury model, pass crash tests in US and UK and make a profit?

The long developed bi-turbo V8 is where my money would go. I would not be suprised to see the current 5.2 V10 either though. The W12 is an overweight relic, small highly blown motors are the future. IMO Audi have big made mistakes recently with the S and RS models -probably pressure from Munich, but still disappointing.
Biggest improvement would be weight loss, tis a shame the A2 flopped. Maybe with ever tightening emissions we'll see a return to Al and then onto more exotic materials in the general range.

An engine with not a lot more horsepower (maybe 50) but a huge increase in torque (at least 500 lb ft at 2,200 rpm) makes the most sense in today's higher fuel cost environment. A car running with very high torque won't need to reach it's power in the upper horsepower band to produce acceleration and instant reponse. This will result in fuel savings. Granted, it's not a fun as running the gear to redline, but acheiving the same acceleration results and saving fuel in what is sure to be a future of $4 - $5/gallon gas is important.

I'm fairly sure it wont be turbo-charged! In this class Audi wont turbo-charge before BMW, which will probably happen next time round (particularly as the next M5 will be a V8 to meet new emissions legislation).
I suspect it might be a reworked version of the 4.2 V8 with output up to 450BHP or - and probably most likely - the 5.2 V10 as in the new R8 V10 with 518BHP!
518BHP seems excessive for it's class, but consider the RS6, both it's main rivals - the BMW M5 and the Mercedes E63 AMG - have an output of ~500BHP, but the RS6 has 580BHP!!
Audi want to be top dog! They will probably do this with the aim/intention of being the new leader and the one to beat...
