Vauxhall's 'legend' has returned: the Corsa SRi is back. Introduced into Continental markets earlier this year as the Opel Corsa GSi - which by following the link, you can have all the details of - the new SRi moniker revives Vauxhall's famous sporting breed of Corsa after a two-year absence from showrooms. The SRi is the model of choice for those not wanting the 'hardcore thrills' of a VXR but still wishing to enjoy the dynamic and visual appeal of a more sporty Corsa.
Offered with the choice of two powertrains - a 150 hp 1.6-litre turbo and a 1.7-litre 125 hp CDTi diesel unit - the Corsa SRi packages an affordable hatchback with 'incredible levels' of driving excitement. Based on the unit used in the VXR, the 1.6-litre petrol allows a 0-60 mph sprint of 7.6 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph. The CDTi diesel churns out a hearty 58.9 mpg on the combined cycle over the petrol unit's 35.8 mpg, however combines this with impressive performance: acceleration to 60 mph from standstill is achieved in 9.3 seconds and onto a top speed of 121 mph.
The Corsa's enhancements extend to a striking exterior with the addition of a front spoiler and body-coloured side sills, remaining slight but dynamic. 17-inch alloys contribute to the SRi's sporting intentions, while chrome twin exhausts and a 'subtle' rear tailgate spoiler head up the SRi's rear. A specially-developed sports chassis is available on both models, producing a more poised stance by lowering the car by 18mm at the front and 15mm at the rear.
