Caught In The Alps

WorldCarFans has acquired several solid spy photos of the Volkswagen Golf VI being tested in the Alps.  Why would VW be prepping a new Golf just a few years after the release of the Golf V?

One belief is that customers do not feel the Golf V is worthy of its somewhat expensive price tag, leading to poor sales.  Sources close to VW say that lagging European sales of the 2007 Golf, combined with a lengthy manufacturing time, has left Volkswagen management with their lederhosen in a bunch.  In response, engineers are readying an upgraded version of the current platform, allowing for a streamlined assembly process at a lower cost.

To maintain a youthful interest in the car, Volkswagen is expected to design this car with a little more excitement and enthusiasm.  Although masked, the new Golf looks to be a bit more aggressive in the front, and somewhat more sloped in the back, giving it a little more sex appeal.  This new Golf also appears to have larger wheels than the 2007 model year, but that could be for a variety of reasons.

The current FSI petrol and TDI diesel engines are expected to be used on the next generation Golf, with more opportunities to use the supercharged and turbocharged TSI system.  Some are even speculating that the next GTI will tap into a 2.0-litre version of the TSI, boosted in size from 1.4 litres.

The belief is that Golf VI will reach European dealerships towards the end of 2008, while Americans are expected to have to wait a while longer.

And as you all know, in addition to the 3-door pictured here a 5-door version has been spied in California.

well now . . . VW has finally woken up to the fact that their cars need more than technical excellence and sensible fuel consumption in order to be able to attract customers. keep it up on all your model line up !

of course i drive a Japanese car. VW's are yawn inducingly dull. i feel i have some merit in my argument as i happen to be a designer.... ad let me tell you creativity and visual drama are words that you couldnt describe a VW with.

VW , BORING Asif ? what do you think is the powerplant and the drivetrain for the Bugatti Veyron and the Bently Continental Flying Spur ? it's VWs " boring " turbocharged W16 and W12 engines respectively ! yeah right , you deserve to drive a cheap Jap urbohauler.

"Asif".....you say that you are a designer...of what?....not automobiles that's for sure. VW group are more mixed streamed....creative in Audi to workhorse like in Skoda....what makes VW more special....is that there designers have been poached by other motor manufacturers.....look at the new Ford Mondeo (in fact look at the last Mondeo....passat inspired) or Kia motor group with their Cee'd range....designers who previously worked for VW Group.

Nice. The new golf will be a success of course. This is why VW makes money and American car companies lose money. AMERICAN CAR COMPANIES ARE LOSING BILLIONS!!! WE WIN!!! HIGH HORSE POWER BENZ, M6, 911 ETC. WE WIN.

woah! talk about touching a raw nerve. i love it! okay first of all let me answer my critics. i said vw was dull, not Bugatti or Bentley. and i was talking about DESIGN/STYLING people, not powerplants! hello?!! secondly the level that Audi is the creative kid in the vw empire is stretching the truth also. nice cars, for sure, but the SAME face and grille on every model. hmmm real creativity there! thirdly the idea that designers are being poached could be true but then who knows, may be they jumped ship? and wanted to free there ties from the constraints of suffocating desing studios. on evidence of their work at the new firms i'd say that they are allowed more freedom. and lastly no i am not a car designer but a furniture an product and lighting designer, and lets not forget car deigners are taking cues and ideas from ALL 3 that i have mentioned.

I had a Golf 4 (next to my 5 series of course), I have a friend that has a Golf GTI. In terms of design it's rubish but the engine and the drivetrain are preety good. ASIF was reffering strictly to design, and I also believe it's very boring, but as cars they are preety good.

just what i wanted, a new Golf. i just hope the GTI is better than the last one, not that the last one is bad but like me, all VW GOLF GTI fans always look forward to a new GOLF GTI.

powerplants and drivetrains are two major componentries that matter critically as far as the efficient operation of ANY automobile is concerned . why , a Bently Continental Flying Spur is no more/less than a VW Phaeton re-skinned along Bently's lines. all those clueless "brand addicts" should realize this fact. i think that VW IS CAPABLE of designing sexy automobiles if it really wants to but the company has to maintain the enduring character that its name VOLKS(people's)WAGEN(car) stands for. much like Maranello had to go along the principle that they always have to turn out wild - looking two- seaters that get you from here to the next block on a full tank of gas - all with no provision for a decent luggage space .

Hi guys, i'm new here, asif you too included, ive been a golf fan (and mechanic) for ages, apart from being an auto mechanic, 1 thing i know vw stuff for is pure simplicity, all my clients are simply excited to bits about the latest golf series (a good reason for them to stay alive)ive always taken the design of the mk1 as a proper way to make a car that you push into a niche to meet a group of customers, so anyone comparing it to a bmw, peugeot or worse still a japanese is not getting it cos the golf and every idea behind it is basically to meet the demands of the type of driver its aimed at, cos ive driven every mk and found out the styling, engine, drivetrain are still made to give anyone who missed out on the "good times" (i mean mk1)a chance to catch it, so using modern technology (example DSG box design)better styling and safety, i care if you drive a jap and you compare it to a golf and say its boring, NO its not! pls find time, an mk1 and plenty of road maybe you'll just see.
