Audi UK's new A5 coupé range will be joined by two new engines from next week with the introduction of the 2.7-litre TDI and 3.2-litre FSI units. Priced from £31,640 for the 2.7 TDI and from £33,230 for the 3.2 FSI, the two engines will join the existing line-up consisting of the 4.2 V8 FSI, used in the S5, and the 3.0 TDI diesel unit. Both new engines feature refinements boosting power, performance and economy.
The 3.2-litre FSI petrol unit, developed for and used in the A4, A6 and A8 models, has its power increased from 256 PS to 265 PS with peak torque of 330 Nm now delivered at a lower range of 3,000 to 5,000 rpm. The 3.2 FSI is a capable engine, enabling a 0-62 mph sprint in 6.6 seconds from rest, while an electronically-limited 155 mph can be reached. Fuel consumption, thanks to Audi valvelift technology, is up 10 percent to 31.7 mpg.
The new 2.7-litre TDI features advanced common rail piezo injection, reducing emissions and ensuring a smoother combustion process. A power hike of 10 PS over the existing unit in A4 and A6 models to 190 PS and a 20 Nm increase in torque to 400 Nm at only 1,400 rpm generates impressive figures. The 0-62 mph run is achieved in 7.6 seconds, continuing on to a top speed of 144 mph. Fuel economy on the combined cycle is at 42.2 mpg.
Audi's innovative valvelift technology, used in the A5's new 3.2 FSI petrol unit, was first seen in the 2.8-litre FSI unit for the A6 and, more recently, the A8. By controlling valve opening more precisely than conventional systems, fuel economy is boosted by some 10 percent while emissions are also reduced. The A8 2.8 FSI, thanks to this technology, holds the title of the luxury saloon with the lowest CO2 emissions in the UK market.
Both vehicles are initially exclusively available in conjunction with Audi's multitronic transmission and front-wheel-drive. The new 265 PS 3.2 and 190 PS 2.7 units join the 3.0-litre V6 TDI with 240 PS and the 4.2 V8 FSI with 354 PS used in the flagship S5 quattro. Deliveries will start in October.
