Unveiling a peep at a time
The lastest Proton is being readied for its unveiling on August 15th. After releasing a teaser image mid July to spark interest, an avalanche of requests have come in for more information on the newest Proton. The Malaysian company decided to put four cars in huge perforated boxes around the country, so that the Malaysian public can take a sneek-peek for themselves.
Since the 'soft' launch interest has been high and orders have been coming in steadily, even though the official name of the car is not yet known. The new Proton comes in 5 versions, a Base Line manual and automatic, Medium Line manual and automatic and a High Line automatic, all with a 1.6 liter engine with prices ranging from 45,000 RM (just under 9,500 Euro) to 55,000 RM (approx. 11,500 Euro).
“The new sedan is Proton's pride and holds promise to be Malaysia’s joy”, added Syed Zainal, Manging Director at Proton.

PROTON is unveiling just a little bit more of its new sedan. Starting today, it offers a peekaboo through peep holes of the boxed-up new sedan.
The new sedan in giant boxes have been placed in four venues across the country -- CineleisureThe Curve, Mutiara Damansara, Selangor (10am to 10pm); Proton showroom in Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah, Penang (8am to 8pm); Proton Showroom in Plentong, Johor (8am to 8pm) and Giant Hypermarket, Jalan Gambang, Kuantan (10am to 10pm).
"We're happy with the excitement building up for our new sedan," said PROTON Holdings Berhad Managing Director Dato' Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir.
PROTON began to accept bookings from 22 July 2007 and all the public could see then was a visual of the silhouette of the car. That was enough for quite a number to commit and make bookings for the new sedan, he added.
"However, we have been receiving many requests that we show more and that was what prompted us to come up with this peekaboo idea of showing the actual car, but just enough only" he added.
The new sedan will be at the four venues for the peekaboo until 15 August 2007 where it will be officially unveiled.
The new sedan is PROTON's pride and holds promise to be Malaysia’s joy, added Syed Zainal. It will be available in five variants -- the 1.6 base line automatic and manual; 1.6 medium line, automatic and manual; and 1.6 high line, automatic only. The model comes in seven colours of iridescent white, metal gray, tranquility black, solid white, solid red, light gold and blueberry tea.
The new sedan will be the most competitively-priced model in the 1,600 cc category with the price ranging from RM45,000 to RM55,000.
This latest edition of PROTON is the fifth model fully built by PROTON after the introduction of the Waja in 2000, Gen.2 in 2004, Savvy in 2005 and the Satria Neo in 2006. It was developed with the PROTON i-CARE commitment to improvement and growth in quality.
