With the highly controversial BMW X6 Coupe in the middle of its development, BMW shows no fear with the development of yet another raised 4x4 model called X4. Although no information about its design has been leaked, the X4 is expected to resemble the X6. It seems BMW is confident the X6 Crossover Coupe will be a success, and as a result, have gone ahead with the expansion of the X-model range once again.
Surely, many will cry foul and blasphemy yet the fact remains the X5 and X3 have been highly successful for BMW. So it comes as no surprise, BMW is looking to carve out its own niche within the segment which is surely to be copied by other manufacturers in the years to come.
Judging by these photos a lengthened, widened and raised E91 platform from the 3 Series wagon is being used as the basis for the X4. However, no assumptions should be made if it is, in fact, the E91 platform. Since this prototype is clearly in its early test mule stages it could be an all-new platform but most likely the E83 X3 platform in the same way the X5 SAV served as the basis for the X6.
While the next generation X3 is scheduled for release in 2010, a matching X4 Crossover Coupe could be due at about the same time.
