New York Mystery AMG car is a CL 65 - what a let down!
New Mercedes CL 65 AMG

Last Friday we broke the story of the Mystery AMG to debut in New York. And now, MB USA just issued a statement this afternoon confirming as Mercedes celebrates AMG's 40th anniversary.

What a let down, since we just reported today the CL 65 debuted at Amsterdam's AutoRAI in The Netherlands. Looking back at the AMG Private Lounge site, Mercedes chose their words carefully. Never did they mention "world premiere" but instead used "unveil", "latest edition" and "new model". So, naturally enthusiasts jumped to conclusions of never seen before Mercedes model such as the SLS, CLE which are truly a mystery...for now.

However, Mercedes stated that information about "other new Mercedes-Benz vehicles making their debut in New York" would be released at the show. As previously mentioned, most likely the new C-Class but it would be really cool if it were another AMG such as the CLK 63 AMG Black Series which seems to be the consensus from the comments we received. In my eyes, Mercedes would redeem themselves with such a move.

Stay tuned, Mercedes will release more CL 65 photos tomorrow.

[UPDATE 03.29.07]

Apparently the CL 65 is not the Mystery AMG after all. Mercedes announcing its debut in New York just one day after its Amsterdam world premiere seemed to be anti-climatic. Not thinking Mercedes would make two big simultaneous debuts in American, I took the bait. Ignoring those sneak peak photos of the carbon fiber front bumper fascia and rear wing was the key in determining the CL 65 was not the Mystery AMG. But the question still remains: CLK Black Series? Are you stupid? The CL65 was unveiled at AutoRAI in the Netherlands. The car being unveiled at the New York motorshow has carbon fibre bodywork and a boot spoiler. Neither of these is present on the CL65. A different car is being unveled in New York.

Its so obvious that the picture is a Mercedes CLK-DTM. Whether the picture of the car above is the same car being released is the question?

Where is the problem? The mystery AMG is a Mercedes CLK 63 AMG Black Series (with spoiler). http://www.worldcarfans.com/spyphotos.cfm/spyphotoID/6060825.003/pageview/photo/photo/Mini3/page/1/country/gcf/mercedes/new-spy-info-mercedes-clk-63-amg-black-series Check nose and proportion.

This is an such an obvious mistake, the lines are just way off on the CL to the mystery car.

Look at the front end, the distance between the door handle and the mirror, the length of the booth... It can't be the CL... I don't know about other models but I think it will be a version of the CLK...

Look at the roof line and especially the front nose, the lines from the hidden car and CL. From a side angle the CL's is so much blund while the mytery car's is sleek. CL's roof line is more consistently round while the mystery cars have straight sections. Even the wheelbase to roof height ratio is out.

I don't see the logic in unveiling a DTM version of the CLK when phase out to a new model happens in less than two years.
