Interior design

The great success of the Touran is also attributable to its interior, which is both variable and spacious. In addition, all details and materials exhibit an extraordinarily high level of quality and tactile impression. For the CrossTouran, Volkswagen coordinated materials and colors to be used precisely this level. The result was an even sportier interior. Seats and doors are trimmed in fabric with the “Eclypt Elon” pattern. The seating surfaces and seatback surfaces of the height-adjustable comfort seats exhibit an especially eye-catching texture with dimples, which provide a material contrast when paired with the smooth surfaces of the anthracite-color material.

The sides and backs of the seats are also designed in anthracite, and all seams are in the base color of the seat surfaces and door trim. On fabric seats the colors are “Orange” and “Latte Macchiato”. Buyers who choose the Nappa leather option can select from the colors “Teak”, “Anthracite” and again “Latte Macchiato”. Always included on-board: Adjustable lumbar supports on the front seats.

Interior features

Right from the factory the new CrossTouran has a very extensive package of standard equipment. In the interior these include all equipment features of the Touran Trendline, such as the practical storage pockets on the backs of the front seats, center armrest in front with storage box, drawers under the front seats, an additional 12-Volt outlet in the rear section of the center console and a front passenger seat back that folds completely for use as a table or for stowing long cargo items. Cross-specific equipment features such as parking brake lever handle and gearshift knob in leather, three-spoke steering wheel with perforated leather and decorative plates in stainless steel appearance, as well as a dual-tone horn round out the high-end interior features.

Also standard equipment: Climate control system (Climatic), electric window lifts all around, a cargo cover, six airbags, “RCD 300” MP3-capable radio with CD player and a speed control system.

Interior variability

Pioneering when it comes to variability is the innovative individual seat system of the CrossTouran. The three lightweight seats of the second row are arranged next to one another and can be stowed forward with just a few hand movements, adjusted longitudinally or from laterally, folded or removed. Optionally, the CrossTouran can also be equipped with a third row of seats. When they are not needed the two full-size individual seats can be separately lowered into the cargo area floor with just a few hand movements.

First seating row

With its interior height (1.02 meters) and elbow room of 1.46 meters, the CrossTouran also offers an exceptional amount of open space in the first seating row. A slightly elevated seat position in front (631 millimeters high) compared to conventional cars and optimally designed interior ergonomics also provide for very relaxed driving. The seats in the first row have a longitudinal adjustment range of 254 millimeters; the driver seat and front passenger seat can also be varied in height.

Second seating row

The three individual seats arranged next to one another in the second row can be adjusted longitudinally, shifted laterally, folded or removed. At approx. 17 kilograms per seat they are very lightweight. Because of the relatively high seat position (676 millimeters) the seats of the second row also offer good thigh support, and this yields excellent legroom comfort. Headroom here is 989 millimeters. Practical: The folding table and pockets on the seatbacks of the driver and front passenger seats, the middle seat that can be used as a table, storage bins in the floor area in front of the seats, and generously sized storage bins in the doors.

Very easy to operate and practical in design are the mechanisms for adjusting and removing the seats. The seat is adjusted longitudinally by lifting a hand lever. If the seatback is to be folded, the entire seat folded forward or completely unlatched for removal, this is done using easy to reach and operate lifting loops.

Third seating row

As an option the CrossTouran can be equipped with a third seating row. If the seven-seat variant is chosen, Volkswagen’s CrossTouran becomes a van whose sixth and seventh seats are fully usable, comfortable and safe for adults on medium distance trips. The legroom needed in the third seating row can be adjusted individually by making longitudinal adjustments to the seats in the second row.

When they are not being used, the seats in the third row can be lowered into the floor with just a few hand movements. Afterwards, there is a flat cargo floor again. The seats can be folded individually, that is with a 50/50 split. In the lowered state, the floor is just seven centimeters higher than without the third seat row. Of course, three-point seat belts and removable head restraints with long adjustments are used. The head restraints can be stowed safety and cleanly in a separate bin in the cargo floor before lowering the third seat row.

Cargo space

Optimal space utilization in the CrossTouran extends right through to the cargo area. Storage bins in the cargo area side wall and in the cargo area floor can be used to stow what otherwise would fly around loose. Even the triangular safety reflector has a separate mounting bracketin the tailgate trim, where it is always optimally accessible, even with a full load of cargo.

In the classic five-seat configuration, the cargo area can consume up to 695 liters of cargo; the maximum payload ranges up to 660 kilograms, depending on the specific version. When all of the second row seats are removed and the third row is lowered, the maximum cargo volume grows to a maximum of 1,913 liters, and when the second row of seats is removed in the five-seater the volume increases to a spacious 1,989 liters, which represents a top value in this class.

Interior bicycle mount

Available as an option for the CrossTouran is an interior bicycle mount developed by Volkswagen Individual. The advantage compared to a roof carrier: The bicycles are better secured and protected against theft and dirt.

Engines

The most powerful gasoline engine of the CrossTouran is a four-cylinder TSI with 125 kW / 170 PS. This engine is shifted via the standard six-speed DSG dual clutch transmission. At the next lower power level a Twincharger is used; it delivers 103 kW / 140 PS and is paired with a standard six-speed gearbox. In this case, the dual clutch transmission is available as an option. As the entry-level engine for the CrossTouran, Volkswagen is offering a 1.6 liter gasoline engine with 75 kW / 102 PS shifted via a five-speed gearbox.

The top of diesel engine line-up is rounded out by a TDI that also outputs power at 125 kW / 170 PS. The entry-level into this economical drivetrain world is marked by a four-cylinder with 77 kW / 105 PS. Ranging above this engine are TDIs at power levels of 103 kW / 140 PS and 125 kW / 170 PS. All CrossTouran TDIs have a diesel particulate filter and can be ordered with DSG, which is an exclusive worldwide feature of brands of the Volkswagen Automotive Group. An overview of the Touran engines:

1.6 with 75 kW / 102 PS
The base engine of the CrossTouran that is especially economical in terms of purchase price is a 1,595 cm3 displacement four-cylinder with a power output of 75 kW / 102 PS (at 5,600 rpm). The gasoline engine enables a top speed of 174 km/h. After 13.3 seconds the Touran 1.6 is moving at exactly 100 km/h. The combined fuel consumption is 8.3 liters of super gasoline per 100 kilometers, and the CO2 value is 197 g/km.

TSI with 103 kW / 140 PS
One of the most important engines of the new CrossTouran TSI is a TSI with 103 kW / 140 PS (at 5,600 rpm). TSI stands for a new type of downsizing here – for less displacement, less fuel consumption, and fewer emissions – yet offering more power, more torque and more driving fun. Between 1,500 rpm and 4,000 rpm the TSI develops its maximum torque of 220 Newton-meter. It accelerates the CrossTouran to 100 km/h in 10.0 seconds. Top speed: 194 km/h. At an average fuel consumption of 7.6 liters per 100 kilometers, the engine is extremely economical. Here the CO2 value lies at 181 g/km.

TSI with 125 kW / 170 PS
The most powerful gasoline engine in the CrossTouran is the TSI with 125 kW / 170 PS of power and 240 Newton-meter of torque. This TSI already develops its maximum torque starting at 1,500 rpm. The gently engaging torque that does not let up over a broad range of speeds – unfolded at first by the supercharger and then heated up by the turbocharger –is not offered currently in this form by any other automotive OEM. The CrossTouran reaches a top speed of 206 km/h with the 170 PS TSI; after just 8.7 seconds it is moving at 100 km/h. This contrasts with an average fuel consumption of just 7.8 liters per 100 kilometers. The large TSI (CO2 value: 186 g/km) is shifted via a standard DSG transmission. A powerful, one-of-a-kind combination in the van market.

1.9 TDI with 77 kW / 105 PS
The first turbo-diesel level in the new CrossTouran is filled by the 1.9 TDI with 77 kW / 105 PS and 250 Newton-meter maximum torque. The four-cylinder engine delivers its greatest power at 4,000 rpm, its maximum torque is already available at 1,900 rpm. The powerful 105 PS CrossTouran 1.9 TDI reaches a top speed of 175 km/h, accelerates to 100 km/h in 13.5 seconds and consumes just 6.2 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers on average. CO2 emissions: 164 g/km.

2.0 TDI with 103 kW / 140 PS
Impressive power and low fuel consumption; these two benchmark parameters characterize the first of the two 2.0 TDIs of the CrossTouran. It outputs 103 kW / 140 PS and develops a maximum torque of 320 Newton-meter. The highest power of this sporty and economical engine is output at 4,000 rpm; its maximum torque lies between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm. As a 2.0 TDI with 140 PS the CrossTouran attains a top speed of 194 km/h. The van completes the sprint to 100 km/h in 10.4 seconds. The TDI with 1,968 cm3 displacement consumes a remarkably low 6.2 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers on average (CO2 value: 164 g/km).

2.0 TDI with 125 kW / 170 PS
The second TDI, a 2.0 liter TDI with 125 kW / 170 PS (at 4,200 rpm), 350 Newton-meter maximum torque and piezo pump nozzle direct injection is the most powerful turbo-diesel being introduced on the CrossTouran. The Volkswagen storms to 100 km/h in just 9.2 seconds with this engine. And it is among the fastest MPVs with a top speed of 208 km/h. Nonetheless, its economy also signifies a top value: 6.7 liters in combined driving cycles. Its CO2 emissions are 177 g/km.
